English Lit/Comp Assignments

Here is the form you need to fill out NEXT FALL if you want me to write your college rec letters and application forms.

Download it right away, since these assignments will probably end on Wednesday. Save it for August or September.

If you don't save this, another student probably has; so get a copy from him or her.

Seniors, your EARNEST exam (Scantron) is Friday.

Juniors, your EARNEST exam and some Alpha-smarts writing will be next week.

JUNIORS, REMEMBER TO READ Lord of the Flies AND A NON-FICTION BOOK OVER THE SUMMER. Both are required for next year, at the beginning of the year.

Remember, your Multi-cultural Project (food, etc.) is due Wednesday. Your last PEN will be due Thursday. And we will probably have a Scantron test on EARNEST on Friday. That will be the seniors' final exam.

Attached is the PEN assignment. Put it at the end of your PENotebook. (I will be able to use this last assignment when I write your college recommendations next fall.)

SENIORS: Your topic is the same as the juniors', OR you may answer this question:
"What has been your contribution to this English class, and what have you learned?"

Due Tuesday--on a 3x5 card, "google" Oscar Wilde and write something interesting you found about him. On the back of the card, put your name, period, and the website.

If you missed seeing any part of SMOKE SIGNALS, watch it (or have a friend record it for you) on TUESDAY NIGHT AT 8:30-10:15 on TCM (Turner Classic Movies). The questions will be due o Thursday instead of Tuesday.

PEN on Wednesday, your choice of topic.

Here is information on the film SMOKE SIGNALS. Read it. You do not need to print it out.

The page you received on Thursday (comparing the novel and the film) will be due Tuesday.

Bring it (and THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST) on Monday. And here is a copy of the POEM at the end of the film (plus 2 other "father" poems). Print out the FIRST poem and bring it to class on Monday.

Tuesday--quiz on end of book, Chapters 20-25. If you will be absent Tuesday for a field trip, your makeup for the quiz will be Wednesday.

TOPIC: Write about "understanding" another culture. Bring in THINGS FALL APART and/or THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY (film), but your essay is a personal essay, so that film and/or book is just to get your PERSONAL essay started.

Your Chapter titles are due that day, also.

Seniors: Here is the Senior Portfolio sheet (with requirements), in case you didn't get one. Notice the due date is May 26. It's 100 points, so do a great job.

Here are some handouts for Plato's "Allegory of the Cave."

Read the LONG version of the Allegory ONLY IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. The short version we did Monday is sufficient.

Due Wednesday: your PEN #7 on a topic of your choice--perhaps Spring Break or 4th Quarter.

If you were absent Monday (today), make a copy of the BRIEF Allegory file (attached) and bring Tuesday.

Period 1--midterm tomorrow on ANTIGONE. Before that, we will finish the Socrates film (5 minutes), then 5 minutes to finish the "Taking Notes on Films" handout. Your PEN #6 is due Wednesday also. The topic is--something about the two Antigones.

Period 3--Your PEN #6 is due Wednesday or Thursday (=not late). Your midterm is Thursday. You will get the Socrates film questions (again) Wednesday.

Periods 1 and 3, Thursday you will write an ANTIGONE essay using Alpha-smarts. You should bring your copy of the play, your quotations, and your list of lines for OTHER topics as well.

THINK about the themes. STUDY.

Period 3, your study questions for ANTIGONE are due Wednesday. Groups will report on Wednesday.

Period 1, you have finished your reports (yay). Bring your study questions (late) if you haven't handed them in yet.

Tomorrow (Wednesday), Period 1 starts at 10:15.
Juniors, go to Homeroom at 9:00.

You may ALL hand in your PEN on Thursday instead of Wednesday, no late grade!

(PETER PAN and those going to Bay Math League on Wednesday, you may hand in PEN on Monday, no late grade.)

(If you are in PETER PAN, you may choose to hand in PEN #5 on MONDAY, March 22, for an "on time" grade.)

For Wednesday's PEN # 5, choose some topic that is suggested to you by ANTIGONE. Here are some suggestions, if you cannot think of a topic:
1. How important is it to you, right now, what your parents/grandparents/ancestors were or did?
2. Why did Antigone change?
3. WHY do you wish/think she should NOT have changed?
4. Is it pride or fate or what that brings down "famous people" (pick one or two people)?

Your PEN #4 is due Wednesday. You may choose your own topic. (Use one of the topics listed on Feb. 25, if you don't want to choose your own topic.)
Make it a Personal Essay (start with something that interests you, etc.). Use the personal essay rules/directions.

Keep answering the ANTIGONE Study Questions. Their first due date is this Thursday.

Keep looking for your two topics as you read the play. They are due at the end of the play.

Friday we will start reading the play aloud, after casting parts. Bring your copy of ANTIGONE.

PEN # 3 topic, for March 3:Choose one:
1. What is a good leader?
2. What is a good citizen?
3. ...something about our school election (Tuesday)
4. Choose your own topic:)

Reminder: For PEN #2, due Wednesday, Feb. 24, the topic is something about FAMILY, GOOD LEADERSHIP, or DUTY. (Revise PEN #1 IF I made corrections on your essay. So Wednesday you will hand in #1, Revision for #1, then #2, in that order.)

REMINDER TO YOSEMITE STUDENTS: Your 20-transitions essay (2 pages) is due Friday, Feb. 19. Type the essay and highlight the 20 transitions. Have a complete heading and a title. Enjoy!

Your Personal Essay Notebook (Assignment Number 1) is due IN A FOLDER next Wednesday, Feb.17. NEW students, your topic is “All of us have moments when we have feelings of delight. Take any one of your own delights and, using Priestley’s pattern of organization, write an essay describing it.”. Follow the rules on the pages you downloaded. (Your essay should be at least one full page long, typed and double-spaced.) Ask me questions in class, if you have any.

FORMER students: Your PEN #1 topic is "In our study of personality types, what did you learn about your personality type, or about SOMEONE ELSE's personality type? This choice includes a literary character's personality type."

Bring your BOOK ORDER (and your payment, if possible) FRIDAY.

Also bring the GURNEY'S LOVE LETTERS questions.

Attached is the BOOK ORDER FORM. Please print it out and BRING IT by this FRIDAY, so I may order your books before Yosemite. Order the books by Friday. (Check is preferred, but you may bring cash.)

Even if you forget your money, BRING THE FORM!

Thursday you will pick up your English folder from last semester's English teacher. So if you are absent Thursday, remember to go get that folder the day you return.

Wednesday we will probably finish the Personality Types information (and see a video you will "connect" to Personality Types).

Yosemite students: I will hand you an assignment or two that will be due FRIDAY, Feb. 19. One is an essay using 20 of the TRANSITION words on the handout I will give you by Thursday this week.

Remember, all students: your first PEN is due Feb 17, Wednesday.
