    • You may not receive compensation for the work; hours must be entirely volunteer-based.

What is a 501(c)(3) Organization?

A 501(c)(3) is a nonprofit organization recognized by the IRS for charitable purposes. Volunteering with these organizations ensures your hours meet SMHS and graduation requirements. Examples may include charitable foundations, food banks, hospitals, animal shelters, educational programs, and environmental groups.

Why It Matters

Beyond fulfilling a graduation requirement, community service enhances your college applications. Admissions officers look for students who:

  • Step outside their comfort zone

  • Make a meaningful impact in their community

  • Reflect thoughtfully on their service experiences

While SMHS will only document the 40 (10-12) or 50 (Class of 2029) hours required for graduation, students are encouraged to go above and beyond. If you exceed 40 or 50 (Class of 2029) hours, please keep your own personal records for future use (e.g., college applications, scholarships, resume building).

Submission Process

  • Completed and signed Community Service Forms should be submitted to the Community Service bin located in the Counseling Office.

  • Be sure all forms are accurately filled out and include the organization’s contact information for verification purposes.

  • All Students who submit their 40 or 50 (Class of 2029) hours by the end of their Sophomore year will receive an award of completion.

Alternative Community Service Project- Please email Dr. Wolf [email protected] for more details. The project will include 25 hours of community service dedicated to one meaningful project.

Need Help?

If you are unsure whether an opportunity qualifies or if the organization is a 501(c)(3), please speak with your counselor or Mrs. Quiroz (Registrar) before completing your hours.

Thank you for giving back to your community and representing SMHS with pride and purpose.
