    • TIMES: 3:30 to 4:30pm

The Audition Process:

  • Answer a few questions for Mr. J regarding your interest in singing.
    • There are no wrong answers.
    • This part of the audition is not for a score.
  • Sing My Country ‘tis of Thee
    • This should be performed in a “classical” style.
    • Mr. J will determine the key and may ask you to sing it more than once.
  • Tonal memory exercises.
    • Mr. J will play five notes on the piano and you will be asked to sing them back (on “doo”) as accurately as possible.
  • Sight-sing a simple melody as accurately as possible.

NOTE: Only Mr. J, Connie Washburn (our accompanist), you and possibly one other music teacher will be a part of this audition. No one else is allowed to view or hear your general audition (including friends and parents).

What to prepare:

  • For Concert Choir: My Country ‘tis of Thee should be learned well enough so that you feel comfortable with this song. It does NOT need to be memorized. You may use words and music if needed.  If you do not know the song, you can find the music and a recording on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Country,_'Tis_of_Thee
  • For Chamber Choir: The Sally Gardens should be learned well enough so that you feel comfortable with this song. It does NOT need to be memorized. You may use words and music if needed.  If you do not know the song, you can find the music and a recording on
  • Practice sight-singing a basic melody. If you have friends in choir already, they should be able to point you in the right direction on this (Sightreadingfactory.com). If not, feel free to ask Mr. Jamieson for help.

What if I am chosen to be in Concert Choir:

  • Mr. Jamieson will inform the counselors that you have been selected and make sure that it is worked into your schedule for next year.
  • Concert Choir meets during 6th Period every day and is a class like any other.  Attendance will be taken daily for all choir members.  Please be sure that you are prepared for this commitment.
  • A parent meeting will be held at the beginning of the school year to discuss expectations, performance schedule, retreat, tour, and festival schedule for your ensemble. The meeting will be in the choir room at SMHS – Room 605
  • You will be given music to learn over the summer. It is expected that you spend time learning and practicing that music so that we start the school year prepared.  Much like an English class has assigned summer reading, we have assigned summer music.
