Welcome to our monthly Friday Java with Jason and today we're going to be discussing some pretty cool topics that I know everybody has a lot of interest in so what I'm going to ask everybody to do is make that you have your microphone muted then keep it muted if you have questions feel free to take those into the chat for your friends who are probably texting you saying this question asked that question go ahead and add those in we are recording this animal posted to the website by the end of the day so if you want to refer any of your friends that I'll break please make sure that you are listening closely because we are providing a lot of insight into some new programs from adjustment to own policies and practices and a lot of the work that we're doing is still inserted be the long-term planning phase that we're really excited because we're seeing that a lot of hard work that we've done so far is coming to fruition it started today our focus is primarily on the dual enrollment programs that we are working on with PCC Define what that is a lot of people think they know but it's really good to understand what those programs actually are the same goes for concurrent enrollment or articulations and really just taking courses anywhere other than San Marino High School that may affect a student and talk a little bit about the collaborative efforts we've had with Huntington Middle School this year I would been doing a lot of good work to connect your student programs and our staff alright ask Miss fitzer is on the line she can feel free to unmute and give us any updates to RP gsa's especially with regard to plans and our upcoming golf tournament with thanks to a lot of the case is going down and our golfing today in the purple tier we're going to proceed forward with their let's see so first night to our graduating 2021 seniors we are very hopeful we are now on plan I don't know XX we're close to plan Z pictures of done a great job what is constantly pivoting and responding to our current situation so appreciative of that we are planning they are planning a celebration at may look a little different you little different there will be a great night for the 2021 graduating class along with graduation I think that Jason can talk about you and they've gone ahead and pull the seniors and there will be a big reveal at the end of this month as to the scene so instead of kind of continuing in the vein of the water theme of last year they've decided to go ahead and pivot and senior classes voted they've kind of tallied all the votes and there will be a wonderful reveal at the end of this month so please look for that and more correspondence from the committee will be coming to ask for your support volunteer time and effort and resources so definitely please respond to those requests it takes a whole village to put this grad night on and it's our community hug goodbye to the car and I hope that you will all be a part of it and then the other wonderful news is Jason just noted things are opening up the vaccine is being distributed as things are looking better but during this whole pandemic believe it or not the golf courses have been open and people have been golfing it's been one of those restaurants and sports that is easily done socially distance and so we are so excited that our spring fundraiser is going to be a return of the golf tournament and at a beautiful private club San Gabriel Country Club so we realized not everybody calls me on I'm so we created opportunities for non-golfers and as you know in the fall the board decided to kind of give the community and are tight and families a little bit of a break so we didn't have a traditional parent party fundraiser that we couldn't get together as a high school Community to support our students and our school and administration but this spring fundraiser is more for the whole community so I can buy the whole Community whether you're in a lung or you know part of our city rotary different part of the first city to come out and either grip it and rip it for our high school or come join us in other capacities this is our one and only major fundraiser of the year and we are so excited that it will be in person how that will look maybe a little different but we are very helpful that it will be in person so those are kind of a two big things coming up you know PTSA is here for all of you if you have any issues or focus is really on family engagement and trying to keep our family connected to our high school in this time of distance learning the students are a big part of our PTSA they continue to be involved we continue to support ESP and all the other care mentoring and true I'm on campus if you have any great ideas or you feel that we haven't done something that we definitely could do please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly and or to anyone on the executive board so I'm with that I say go Titan and have a great weekend thank you so much Helen and I'd be remiss if I didn't introduce and thanks or they're attending board member Julie Chen Lin thank you for being here Julie and our esteemed superintendent dr. Wilson who is also joining us today we really appreciate that you guys are in attendance moving we're going to hear as we do each one of our job has from our fantastic counseling lead in our Wellness Center on this Tanya L Hindi so Tanya if you are on the line so free unmute she may not be online I'm scanning through I should probably coming out of our training that we just did so we'll we'll come back around to Tanya when she's able to get online so let's jump right into we're all here today and that's to discuss all things having to do with Jewel enrollment articulation concurrent enrollment and we're going to get into some of the process that we're going through with how we build our master schedule and what that means hidden access on two courses of course we have our resident expert in all those things online as well I'm mr. Carlos Cass and Clay has been doing a lot of great work with are fantastic counseling department go ahead and jump right into it so what is dual enrollment doing Ramen essentially is kids taking college courses or college-level courses and earning both a college and high school credit for horses are UC and CSU approved and you think about California so these are the types of credits that would be able to be transferred from the community college level into the CSU UC level also some independent schools that have built an agreement with the community colleges those are wide and varied and so you can't really just say also Independent Schools I take these credits that just depends on the school of course I'm very tip play because the UC CSU system is held in such high regard around the nation lot of these credits can also be transferred when you go outside of California versus ASL at American Sign Language and Kinesiology so why would we select these so first of all many of our students actually take ASL at PCC over the course of their time some start as early as Middle School taking some of these courses to learn how to sign as a matter of fact two of the students who have earned the rotary student of the month this year are very proficient in ASL because they have friends or family who are deaf or hard-of-hearing so they have learning at PCC for many years but that's one reason we chose ASL geology is an opportunity for us to explore the development of a Medical Arts pathway San Marino High School so this is some it came out of our survey of parents a couple of years ago concerning CTE Pathways and one of the one of the focuses was that they would like to see a medical are halfway to Bella at San Marino I'm so we're kind of looking at the viability Medical Arts is a is a challenging Pathway to put in because you've course do need the types of credentials that allow you to teach the courses that would work towards a Medical Arts pathway certification and Kinesiology was one of those that Mr cast-in-place found when he was doing the work with PCC is available is something that would meet a requirement at our school it is often taught in high schools I know my son took Kinesiology when he was in high school and it's a course that could lend us some data about whether or not are soon are interested in going down this pathway we'll talk more about the two courses in ASL in the two courses in kinesiology in a moment we're placing these courses in 7th. And why is that and I use the term zeros every course that we decide to add is going to have an effect on other courses and whether or not those courses bill or become popular or unpopular so for example if we were to try to add ASL into our periods 1 through 6 we would definitely have an effect on other foreign language is potentially but also other electives that students to which means if I take 30 kids away from the electives we currently have that's going to affect different programs it then becomes harder to keep those programs strong enough to validate keeping them in our schedule so we want to make sure that we're not having any extreme negative effects until we know that these forces are viable in the long-term so placing them in 7th. We understand it doesn't give everybody the same access and that's that's unfortunate because you have a lot of kids who are going to do some Athletics or have after school clubs would have you but at this point we need to really proceed slowly to me sure that we have the correct forces that were meeting the needs of students in terms of interest and this also gives us some insight as to long-term effects if we were to maybe move them into first to six. So we're proceeding in this manner to make sure that we don't have any negative effects on our current programs that we all love and want to maintain what about other courses and why is it just he's too why not add a host of others well there's there's a few reasons why first of all we're basing this on student interest so we know we we had some interest in a Medical Arts pathway we know we have students who take ASL as I said earlier I'm in Trends within and outside of these very there's also work that needs to be done and I'm going to leave this right into the Staffing part there and have you focus on The Bold PCC staff availability so I could say I want any courses we could pick 10 courses we could try to run 10 courses we can have kids sign up and we could have them all full and then lets me see she has to do is going fine the professor it sounds kind of hard but what they do is they see okay we've got a course at this time on these days now we go through our Adjunct professor list and see if we have anybody who wants to teach this course this time on these days to these kids if they don't get that Professor we don't run the course so we have the best laid plans right now we have every confidence that we'll be able to do but if we don't have a professor obviously we can't run the course so that's painted the the linchpin right now for us in terms of I'll I'll far will we get next year and how far but we not be able to go we are trying to look at our own Staffing for these courses because obviously that is a benefit right if I have an ESL teacher and a Kinesiology teacher and all the pcc's adjuncts say no and I already know my teacher is going to say yes. That helps in scheduling right it helps me know okay we can run this no matter what we've got a teacher for this and we've already talked to our staff we're not quite there yet we have a few people who are going to close on the ASL but not not quite there yet and we are talking to one of our staff who we believe is cleared to teach kinesiology 01 and 05 so those are some of the the different things is not everything but some of the most pertinent issues with regard to whether or not we can make this work next year alright so if we look at our potential and proposed courses on a SLO 10201 will run semester 102 will run semester 2 and we have looked at how many hours they need to get the credit through PCC on and it will be semester length courses approximately I believe it's 25 students can take a salad might be 30 I can't see Carlos or see if he's shaking his head no or yes but it's roughly 30 students that there was one section why just one section well we could have 60 kids sign up we could have a hundred you could sign up for those are three sections now we need three professors until we're starting small and we'll build out of that Kinesiology O3 is a one-semester course as well I have 30 spaces available for it will be for elective credit on and Kinesiology 05 which we thought was a really interesting course because we do have a CPR graduation requirement this has been cleared to when people in CPR online has a enrollment of 35 and that will be done second semester next year so we look at this let's say that everything goes off without a hitch week turn all four of our classes and it and it works out really great for us what our next steps I am well throughout the year we're going to be evaluating the success of this how do our students doing these classes how does how do they manage their their stress level their homework it is an additional course it is a strong academic course I'll well do our parents interact both with pccn with us because now we're sharing information and data and we're making sure we have kids enrolled at PCC we get those courses on kids transcripts how well is that working how are we able to mitigate any issues that we have that come up throughout the year most of which right now we can't dissipate we've been spending a lot of time with PCC meeting every two weeks trying to think of all the different issues that we can sort of make sure that we don't have as a barrier but we're think about our things that we don't even know about yet so that'll be a big deal for us throughout the year determining the long-term viability of the program that's going to be based on a lot of factors can we find professors we don't want to be consistently in the space of saying we want to offer a cell but it just never flies cuz we can't find a professor or something like that looking at potential new course and we'll talk about this when we we move on a slide articulation which is where some really interesting things can happen long-term potential as well and then constantly evaluating our staff looking for positions as dual enrollment teachers which people will fit in how we can build may be a Medical Arts pathway by using dual enrollment PCC using our staff and developing courses there as well before I move on though I want to let Miss Cass and Clay jump in with n additional pieces or clarifications cuz I often speak and then make mistakes and don't know it he catches me all the time and I have been working very closely with ECC for the last 5 months and we have a bi-weekly meetings so you got all the details there a really really good questions in the chat though I think what will it will finish up with the next 2 slides and then come back to these we definitely want to address these but that's the only thing is we'll Circle back to this excellent excellent is it a little bit different and it's a little bit the same so we're going to talk a lot about that because when we look at this this is kind of where we started this year and one of the biggest challenges with dual enrollment at a school of ours is the law that was written to really build dual enrollment pathway is where High School's was written for low socio-economic high schools to connect students who typically would drop out or or just finished high school and not go to college with a community college so that that secondary connection was made before they ever got out that's not to say that they don't want that for us but a lot of the barriers that are put in place make it difficult for us to build that relationship in a strong way unlike other school so one of the things we started talking about immediately was this idea of articulation an articulated course earns you high school credit because it's your high school course so it is this is our business course we're going to talk about this word a PCC associate's degree or PCC certification so basically it allows you to you take this smhs force that gives you access to these other courses at PCC those courses at PCC are not UC CSU approved but their courses that you're taking can get you credit towards a certain Haitian in that area of study but you can't transfer the credit from PCC into a UC CSU and we we've explored literally all of them because we were hoping that we could maybe find one that was UCCS you cuz we know that that's really important to us and we don't have those currently so the way that this goes as we find a course that we think is equivalent to a PCC course use it's one of their introductory courses their 001 courses something that's at their lowest level and we basically line the two courses up when we say here's what we teach how we teach it our expectations for students all of our activities the units study excetera and then PCC has their list of all the same things and we see if they pretty much man and if they do they'll say okay so your course is equal to our course we're going to basically think of them as the anything and that gets kids access to the next higher level course this time this can be used when kids go to PCC we have quite a few students each year you go to PCC so those credits can be used once the kid gets there and of course they are going to earn graduation credit as well so next year we will be articulating or very very very very close I'm to having full approval for articulation there still some paperwork that needs to be a sub stop here in the next couple of months intermediate business which is the second in our business pathway Miss rushing teaches with pcc's business 116 and in the future what we're going to try to do is determine any other courses that we might have that could articulate within our CTE Pathways we find it a really good place for this type of work because it is generally those College and Career Readiness pathways are things that are taught at ECC that are easily length a little bit more challenging for to do that with our core courses although we will start to look into that just to see if there's some opportunities there as well and then we want to evaluate maybe some higher-level courses for potential potential dual enrollment within our a pathway looking at that we have a financial literacy course that may work on we have some high-level coding on Graphics Design & film horses that may also be able to assist so I'm going to pause there cuz the next slide that we're going to go through it kind of takes us off the articulation and enrollment track and we're going to be able to discuss some of the questions in the chat so we'll start with one have we considered zero. Instead so athletes and students and activities after school and clubs could participate we did a couple of things one not a lot of professors Wanted full class at 7:30 in the morning mostly because it was actually probably be 7 in the morning 7 or 7:30 mostly because a lot of the teachers at PCC are also professionals on so it's not as though they don't work they do works on sometimes they work less or more especially now we have a lot more space and time but we thought that this would be a little bit easier place for us to get those professors we are dealing with the Anthony portantino bill which requires us to start classes I know earlier than 8:30 of course that doesn't affect zero. But because we're still working on what that schedule would and would not be we wanted to be able to not have that be something that we had to kind of wait on you know we're waiting on that we might not get into that sort of list of dual enrollment courses because we'll say well we think it's going to be a 70 might be at 7:30 might be at 6:55 we we have to adjust all of our schedules and we're still doing that work at a district-level Carlos anything else to add I think that. that right there is is is offering it during that 7. Time is is something that's going to allow for plans to something stable that we can guarantee on that we can guarantee that allows for the staffing issues to what's the best-case scenario there alright I'm next how about taking courses in the summer this could allow for other areas of Interest such as programming Information Systems Etc that's something that we are considering PCC has never run summer dual enrollment that's never been a thing and part of it has to be the alignment of semesters so in the past PCC would run a winter a spring a summer and a fall this year they're starting to make that shift and they are looking at a jesting their semesters to align more closely with what local high schools do nothing's ever going to be perfect cuz everybody's semesters are just slightly off my but doing so in a way to offer the potential for summer right now even our summer times would not align with their summer time but even if they were at this point we feel like this is a good first step and we do need a little bit more time for us to set up a lot of the best way to call it is just the the bureaucracy and paperwork of getting all of these courses online. sat get our enrollment registration stuff together with PCC any other thoughts on that Carlos I know it sounds good all right how does r de not sure what de anybody can play that course offerings 3 + limited to students who are from smhs rather than the entire PCC course catalog compared to the jewel of doing raw material how do I dual enrollment offerings compared to the dual enrollment programs at other local public high schools in the focus of our meetings with PCC is is were very curious we want to offer courses that our students are interested in so weak we know what they're doing through concurrent enrollment which is students taking separate taking PCC courses separate from msmhs we know what they're interested but we did a lot of work and I'm picking out what our neighbors South pass so I can yada what they're doing and also the high schools in Pasadena as well and our offerings are similar on to South Pasadena's and others we're looking to expand their but this is this would be a start and it and is comprable to what other schools are doing and of course like I said we're at we're always looking for a way to to enhance that and so one of the things that will probably be doing next year is looking at courses that we think would be viable viability again is in a do you have enough professors if we did offer this is there a high likelihood it would run in your space we're talking to PCC and then survey our students which ones would you like to see which ones would you be interested in taking and they're also in there if there is a we do need at least 15 students to register for a course otherwise PCC won't run the course so that that is something so there's a lot of unknowns but we think a lot of kids will be interested of course the other issue is if we do put it in. 1 through 6 then there is a greater likelihood horse complex at this allows for us to launch the program onto the greatest number of kids where there's the greatest are the fewest number of a potential conflicts being 7th. Obviously that. can work out for everybody but that that's the that's the idea was one of the reasons that we wanted to have dual enrollment the ability to have access to a variety of courses and instructor expertise available in our local community yeah that that is one reason I would say that's probably down the list a little bit I think the main reason was we wanted every opportunity for our students to have the best and most diverse 16 possible as a high-schooler in an effort to create the best resume when looking at where they want to go for post-secondary experiences whether that's a jumping into a career Gap year or jumping into a four-year or two-year and the more opportunities that we can present the better it is for our students they don't have to take all of them but that they're there I think creates a stronger I am stronger student experience overall I won't be putting this presentation up but I will be posting the video because we are recording this right now to facilitate summer planning and scheduling for the next academic Year may we have Clarity around all the classes that are available at 0 and 7. Next year we're going to pause on that one because we're going to talk about that when we get to our next slide and we're going to get a lot of information any other ones by offering business 116 at PCC is not offered it is offered at that's their business course our kids won't take that course the way this works is our intermediate business if kids take that pccc's bad as them also having taken business 116 but don't take both they just take our course and then they get credit at PCC for taking that course do you know what kind of level of interest there is for dual enrollment perhaps too difficult to assess at the moment yeah that's you know that's what this is going to get us is going to get us a lot of in about the interest you know if we only have 20 kids sign up for ASL okay that was a bad choice that's not the thing that anybody wants to do but we're also going to have to dig a little bit deeper you know if we run ASL it's not just wait did you guys not want a SLX did you not want ASL 7. Is that why like did you not want ASL because your first semester was too heavy but if we offered it in second semester it would have been better if we need to start the tea that data out once we get that initial set of Interest kind of outline and then we'll decide what do we need to dig more into to determine how this is working or not working I'm so well feels like we've been doing this forever because I know we've been talking about this for at least the eight years I've been here we were really in the still the infancy stage here because us having the opportunity to actually take those is next year are going to give us way more information than we think we know right now and that's really important for us when summer classes be taken on the PCC campus allow students to explorers and interest not depend on the number of students taking the course or staff in and that's a little bit different it kind of feels the same but essentially what it is is it us telling the community take whatever course you want or take any of these courses we list at PCC at your speed schedule what have you and will also give you credit for that and that's a little bit different and not really the challenges there have to do mostly with Staffing in master schedule because if we don't control for that variable we end up with students who say yeah I got a couple Shear where are trying to take courses outside at at not necessarily PCC but other places that are wasp accredited great but to take all their senior courses as juniors and where is a lot of people say well why not there's a host of issues around doing that if if you have that as part of a policy you cannot staff a high school you just can't do it cuz one year you've got you know 70 kid to take government and econ well that's three sections the ice staff for less than three set those I think those three sections out of my master schedule in the next year nobody does it know I'm going wait a second I let a teacher go because we weren't taking these courses now I need it back because this group of kids decided not to do it can't just be wide open Wild West everybody takes what they want anywhere they want we just take credit for it this has to be very strategic it has to be well in advance and we have to make a Hans and adjustments in our expectations for our master schedule so that we don't end up in situations like that so because of that I'm going to actually jump forward to our next slide we'll come back to the Q&A in terms of what else is happening I'll do the last side Carlos and I'll let you take the right since you are not just the resident expert you're ridiculously brilliant and I feel smart because I why are you so there's that we already share a lot of our staff between Huntington middle school and the high school is everybody knows their Jameson our choir teacher is not teaching at both levels Jose care teaching yearbook at both levels he is primarily on our campuses CTE teacher Spanish Huntington and also up at the high school teaching to I put this out there because I see this as a strength know a lot of people see this is this is oh my gosh you know you got to share staff how do you do that what is done for us with mr. to pay lien and mr. couch old is Cree today is a pretty pretty strong bond between us are two schools as matter fact we meet at least once a week we have a quote-unquote lunch meeting that supposed to go an hour that regularly goes three or four in the idea is that we want to give our middle school as much information about the programs in the development that we're making towards student experiences so that they can think about their programs and build and so we're always trying to do that work into that in one of the things we're considering so I use that word consideration don't don't be telling everybody all this is going to happen consideration of high school Crush four courses taken at Huntington Middle School currently we have quite a few kids to take Algebra 1 at the middle school level but it is often referred to and is actually listed I believe as a high school course the same goes for Spanish 1 2 at the middle school I put consideration because we're actually digging deep into Ed code to see if this is viable that's something we can do if something is prohibited is it there's different sorts of rules around it that we haven't considered a need to think about but we find that could be something really exciting for our kids to be able to report you no more years of Spanish technically 5 years we think that could be a strength and because they are taking a high school course at the middle school level we're just seeing if that's something we can do at this point another change it were making thanks again to the collaboration with honey and our counseling department is will be assigning them their counselor while they're in the 8th grade Sol on April 1st not an April Fool's joke this will actually happen we will be assigning counselors to the 8th graders when they're in there 121 sessions scheduling talking about what they want to do when they're in high school and start figuring out what it means to connect with San Marino High School will be talking to their counselor in the Paw always talk to a counselor but it was not necessarily going to be their counselor and because of the support of Our IT department because there's a lot of background work correctly assign everybody and make sure everybody is in the right spot will be able to do that and that's going to I think help make the connection for our kids give our parents a little bit more of a calm you know month where they're going to know there's the person that I can connect with if I'm worried scared questioning have a concern and it happens now so that's something we're really excited about and it's all due to the fact that we have a middle school that wants to collaborate with us and that in what is the work that we're doing together so Carlos you want to talk more about master scheduling and course request a good kind of Segway into course request what are the big changes that we made this year at the counselors are currently doing right now is is meeting with our 10th graders are current temp graders as well as our incoming 8th graders in these 121 meetings and we we have or are 9th graders and also are 11th graders doing there for your plans as well as talking about college admissions for our current Juniors as they go into other senior year imma be expanded that to Abra the school in the reason why one it's important to talk about scheduling and in your plans and in and have that connection with your counselor for all grades and and we're going to continue to do that but also to a major that we have had in the past was data that was changing when I talk about Dad I'm talking about what what courses students are choosing to take will change from February until we come back in August Jason alluded to a second ago that's not good for planning our staffing and making sure that we can make sure all kids get the the courses that they request and that and that is our goal and so we're having these meeting so we can talk with students week happy families know what they want to take know what their second choice is know what they're planning to do over the summer in didn't get that information so that way we can better serve the students and then off efficiently allocate our staff to to meet the needs of the students one of the big things that that we did this year is the 7th. Athletics and that was done for the biggest tennis to reduce complex we had significant issues when we were studying or old master schedule current Metra schedule and the number of conflicts just typically during that 6. So we want to increase access for all students that's going to even out class sizes and also allow students to take the courses that day want to take and so that that's a big point that the counselors are discussing with the students in those 121 meetings Gap. so this is a particularly common with our seniors having those Gap. And we're discussing right now with our counseling staff ways in which those got periods can occur and we'll be talking with our current Juniors about that right now during those meetings so the current Juniors right now our meeting with their counselors until February 26th and then also summer school data so we also want to know what students are taking for and so that's one question that all of our counselors are asking because we want to know how we can best allocate our teachers so that way class sizes are balanced so is a lot of things going on right now the important thing is that everyone knows me information knows what's available feel free to ask counselors myself Jason any questions that you might have we want to answer questions in in and help families plan so that way you know what they want to take right now it's the same thing that they want to take an August but also meets the needs of the student all right we've got quite a few he's in the chat but I'm going to refer to and also want to welcome our our Other boiman Board member Miss Jane Sean and thanks for joining us appreciate that recognized in Conneaut horses will be available to 10 through 12 graders and seniors will get priority registration so we'll go through seniors get an opportunity Juniors and then sophomore to fill the classes out the other indices up a potential this is a huge benefit for dual enrollment is PCC is there throughout every process so in order to get this dual enrollment course you have to apply to PCC and go to that price but we have a person over there who's incidentally Austin who's named Carlos who will take our students and every aspect of it they'll help them out with a lot of kids start the process and don't really finish especially when it comes to clean curling romant cuz with you're on your own with dual enrollment they have we have that extra layer of support to make sure the kids get in there but we will start with those seniors as Jason said and we will likely be doing sort of a training night with Carlos where he'll show us here's how you do this process these courses will in person or online with me just don't know yet you know everybody wants to go back to in-person PCC does as well but it's all going to be sort of a game-time decision based on everything that everyone's dealing with this will be posted on my job with Jason link which I put in the chat and I'm and I will be emailing that out to all parents either the end of the day today or in my Monday email all right so question can't you put out a list of courses available that meet the requirements at a professor and fit our schedule and see how many students sign up and pick the courses that have enough and roll the supposed limiting to a couple of courses we probably are going to be doing something like that next year but in terms of taking this first step for us it's about managing expectations you know if you dive into the deep end of the pool and you haven't swum or swam I was an English teacher which one is a Carlos lamp lamp many many many years or even even many days like I'm a pretty good swimmer but I'm apprehensive when I jump in the ocean so I go to toes and then you know I just got to work your way until you feel comfortable a lot of local high schools and not even local but just surrounding communities even around me I started by diving in and it bombed and it bonds because it's so new and it's so incredibly difficult to manage that they had a lot of failure failure and enrolling students failure and managing the data failure and kids under what the expectations were on people over reaching on people not getting the access that they thought they were going to have so this is about us managing expectations walking in and then building on successes rather than have what could potentially be big failures and we did some of that work with our local high schools and talk to them a little bit about you know we would see they offered a bunch of courses in the beginning and then you quickly see those courses they died and it wasn't so much based on student interest it was based on they had some courses that they were trying to do in their core so they would have core science courses or quart which courses that were doing Roman that kids would then start to back away from and not enroll it so we kind of took that off the plate and we thought this the slow step approach which I know if your apparent York junior or senior like no I want it right now and I get that but we have to do the best for us we want this to be a long-term benefit not just for the kids we have now but for all of San Marino why did we drop span 784 next year any chance it can be offered the leave review of our courses so we talked a little bit about the Deep. where is small high school and we're trying to be a comprehensive high school I'm going to compare this to my three top experiences with high school so San Marino Santa Monica and Redondo Beach all comprehensive high schools have great programs we have pretty close to as many programs as both of those much larger high school by much larger I need Redondo Beach is around 3,000 and so Santa Monica we have a full Athletic program Zappa the Arts CTE Pathways ap's honors with a lot here's the deal though because we only have 950 ish to a thousand kids every year when we have maybe a group of 30 kid interested in Spanish or English 7/8 that becomes what's called a Singleton okay so we look at that we go case we have English 7/8 as a single we know how 30 kids and this very basic it was honours actually I'm sorry Spanish sorry Spanish 7/8 we have this Singleton for students who have taken now re years of Spanish these are high-level Spanish students and they're not taking the AP so we look at which Singleton can we manage the best yr AP course had actually I think three sections this year where is our Spanish 7/8 hat one and then that one section can start to it has a domino effect wherever you put that in the schedule cuz I put it. Too and I get all my 30 kids in there I taken them out a lot of other things are going to be able to get into whereas if they take the AP which is essentially essentially the same course covering the same material in the same curriculum we can now get more opportunities to those 30 kids and it doesn't have a negative effect on them your schedule I don't know if I was very clear on that some of that Carlos talk because he is a much better speaker when it comes to master schedule tonight about this for a long time that was really good and I mean that that's that's really for a lot of courses and actually expanding it but we're expanding and terms and in areas where we see student interest and the Spanish 7/8 is in alignment with our other language is also a Chinese Japanese so it is a line there so that the continuing goes from 1 2 3 4 5 6 into the AP course summer we're standardizing that flow now if students don't want to take what we are proposing a choice for those students we know if they do move in happy birthday don't move into a p but I think also that there are some other options so you know there's this there's a ASL there's other electives there are other choices for students to make butt I think I'd I think that's in order to give all students choices as Jason said it is important to to minimize those numbers of the quantity of Singleton that we do and how about aren't in our master schedule and if the courses were dramatically different then of course we would want to be offering the the both options but at that level they are very much the same NC Take 6 academic periods and participate in Sun Prairie Athletics absolutely is kinesiology meant to be science replacement or strictly CTE neither Kinesiology will be an elective credit at this point but as we build Medical Arts pathway that's likely going to shift that could shift to getting a CTE credit that could shift to becoming a science credit we're just going to have to see how that goes this year again managing expectations and trying to do the best we can for our master schedule if we have Kinesiology become a science credit that's going to affect our master schedule and you like well why it's in 7. Because as a kid if I I've got into Kinesiology then I'm not going to take physics or I'm not going to take whatever I see it as a replacement. So we have to really manage that and make sure that we're doing this in a way that doesn't destroy our course and again maybe it won't maybe we go into this and we had a set of understandings or we thought we understood and now we've got the data back that tells us we can go in this direction and it's going to actually support doing that and Jason a tad one thing there is is is dual enrollment is it to replace what we do the courses that we teach it's what we're doing is increasing opportunities for students so expanding the the choices that students can take and we also have no incentive and there's no good reason to replace our courses we know for a fact that the caller the college is place an extremely high value on smhs course and a factor that in Indian Missions process they know they have data on the caliber of students that we sent to colleges so I mean our courses are key no matter what your grade is in that course our course is carry weight and so that is something that's important to to to acknowledge yeah if you haven't watched we we did post and share our Junior parent night meeting with what was that gentleman's name Carlos do you remember off the top of your head mr. Bischoff yeah and he said that when colleges read a kids transcript or a kids application and they see San Marino do they know that there's a difference he's a very clearly your courses carry a lot lakes around the country because they know the rigor here the expectations and the amount of learning that takes place in our classrooms is superior and you know it you can you can say what you want but that's coming from a guy whose whole job is to read applications and work with others who read applications and determine which kid should get in two colleges SL will satisfy language requirement we have a we always accepted ASL outside as a language requirement for our purposes we're going to be doing some tweaking on that policy to over the course of the this summer keeping everything as is right now but one of the things again in terms of building a solid master schedule and an experience for students that get them the most opportunities within our school day is to make sure that we know what forces are being outside of the school day and that's not that's not to necessarily control it but what we learn from that is if we again have a lot of kids taking yourself why would we offer that if we can okay here's an opera refers to offer that let's see how viable it is so we're going to be putting out more information on that very soon or smhs counselor informs us there will be a new form that students need to submit to apply a grade from outside course that is not available now we are keeping everything as is right now but you should always be reaching out to your counselor if you think even for a moment I'm taking a course through this other place and I would love to have it on my transcript don't do it after the fact then get mad because that's not you know it's sometimes better to ask for forgiveness than permission but in this case please ask permission for what grade students receive from these courses count for GPA is anything that goes on our transfer accounts for the GPA but we have a pretty solid audience here so I'm going to talk to you briefly about GPA and try to convince you of what I know to be true I'm versus what you think most people think that colleges and universities look at our GPA and use that as a defining factor in a kids acceptance they do not and the reason they don't is because they have their own formulas they look at a transcript and decide which courses are most important in that year for that college or university in order to determine a kid's viability at that called University more than that we do not post ranked gpas so if if they were to go into a car Southern University and say you know I'm I'm number one you can't find that information out at smhs cuz we don't rank gpas a lot of people say why want to take more ap's because it'll boost my GPA internally at at at at Sam's it will but none of that matters again to the colleges or universities let's let's do this for example let's say your student who is applying to be in an engineering College you taking a lot of babies maybe you take AP Lit as an English course maybe you take AP u.s. History that's social studies course but y'all stuck a lot of AP in math that's great that College University is likely to look at your transcript and go we really don't care about these forces swords where you push the other side right now that's great he took them you did well to focus on these math courses because those mean more to our success in that College University than the other courses be applied in their own formulas Robin may give you a point for an honors or an AP course we're going to do our calculations because we have a lot of opportunities why some schools don't have that many opportunities for kids so they often times remove that quote extra point so that there is a More Level Playing Field so for those of us who think I got to get all these courses they all have to be turn out to be a p because I need to boost my GPA again internally at our high school that will happen but for college and universities they apply all their own formulas and they just really don't care what are GPA is Carlos you want to say anything more about that I think you know that I think you know each of these colleges has their own calculations and and and they do their own calculations when making those decisions I think that's the important that's the Horton distinction there they don't look at GPA so the the next question I'm looking at is can art and we have seven. PE so that students who are not on the sports teams have the same flexibility in 1 through 6 scheduling it says in you can answer that obviously you're going to know but we're not we don't place things in 04 2nd through 7th right now that is none of that work is being done right now so I think in the past people got used to to this a we've always had an AP blank whatever it was in zero. So I want to take that zero. We actually got a few emails this week about that that's not the way you set up a master as a matter of fact that's how you screw up a master schedule pretty darn quickly because you decide this is where everybody's going to take this thing and then all sudden there's this other course box of kids you know when second the kids you were gone is there a pre think I also need to get into this thing which would only work in zero. What do we do so what we're doing right now is we're Gathering all the students course request every kid 8th grade 9th grade 10th grade and 11th grade to prepare for next year once we have that we know okay 200 kids want this course that's roughly 10 sections might be a little bit less or a little bit more but now we have to go where will those fit the best so that all of those kids can get into that course now maybe it is Earl. Maybe we do have to put one in there maybe it's a 7. Maybe we have to put one in there but the caveat I cannot assign a teacher to teach 0 or 7. I can only ask them if they're willing to do it because that is outside the work day and that is called a 6/5 I'm also potentially so there's a lot of caveats to that that's my building at the way we're building it now is going to be extremely viable long-term this is going to be a solid master schedule and it's going to provide the opportunities to the most kids anything more of that Carlos above I get that Alot this. This is this happens during this. And that's the way it's over Ben and I get that and I get that like that's but also we want to adjust for for what our kids want and need and I want to Branch off into separate question the child as well and so we want to allocate all of our sections based off what they want and need adding a zero. Or a seventh tree in the past that was done because they could not do that during the day and so there is a conflict during so they put it in there or they put it in 7 because they're at the puzzle during the day wasn't solved so what we want to do is solve it so that we can add during the day if we need to add a zero at 7 okay will do that but we'll do that based off of course conflicts do kids not getting what they necessarily need the courses that they can take during the day and also getting him to a separate question over on the chat which was about a balance so about a balance between a regular and wellness and I are on you know we are big proponents of supporting students and wellness but we also know that this is it's a it's a combination of Challenge and support and what we discuss with our counselors and I'm going to go over in and chat with them in just a second is is about guiding the students so these are the courses that she want to take you know we're not going to set up barriers for you but we want you to know what you get into in precisely why after the AP Fair be sent out the kind of the workload calculator so that way you know how much work each of these courses takes there's only so much time in the day and we want we want students to know they're getting into in to assess for themselves to think for themselves is this a good allocation of my time what is a good balanced from me and that's also by the way a big huge key and having these 121 meetings is now we can reach out to a every single student in have that conversation about what is the right balance for you okay there might be disagreements about what that is between the counselor to student and that's okay you know that that's fine we we will we will guide them to take the courses that they want to take and I think that that's that's key yeah I'm going to also piggyback on that the the idea behind well listen rigor is one that's not lost on us it's not lost on our staff that is one of the biggest push-backs we get is that okay so we're offering dual enrollment like what else are we going to offer now what other effects talking to have on students the way we're approaching it is this we offer a highly rigorous opportunity for all kids however you got to choose for you and as as smart as I think I am sometimes I cannot know what makes you well versus what makes me well you know there are some people who I know too I mean you're actually a lot of them a lot of people on here you do are with your day than I think I've done my whole life right and for you that feeds you and you are well and it works for you and it's great right and then people ask me why do you get up at 4 in the morning Jason well I got run and I want to workout I could never do that I don't want to do that but that's my wellness and far be it from you to tell me you know you should sleep that extra two hours in the morning or 3 hours in and do it this way so we have to give kids the opportunity to at one point get out over their skis a little bit because if you've never done that when you are in the safe confines of your family then when you get out into the world and you get out over your skis you just keep tumbling and you just keep tumbling so we're going to create the the most opportunities for kids we're going to manage those expectations so that we can still run a strong Comprehensive High School our self and then we're going to support students and making the right decision for them at that moment which may be a dual enrollment class at maybe an AP and honors what happened but they need to make that choice along with your guidance in the guidance of our excellent counseling staff we got quite a few questions in here 23 new messages I knew I was going to go a little longer today but you guys could I need some of these some of these are you guys responding to each other so let's see if we can race through puke and Carlos if you need to go because I know you're meeting with the counseling department and they are doing all the heavy to make everything we're talking about right here to happen absolutely do that I think I can stay or another we'll go 7 Minutes 8 minutes maybe we'll go till 10:15 the jump from Spanish 5 sister AP is a rigorous this year not an easy transition would like us to reconsider I think the the 7/8 idea I'm going to learn from that this year we're going to see what the what what the data tells us my question is concerning 1 through 6 with corn elective classes not 0 right now Sports will be able to fill up six classes with core and elective classes and take PE during 7 that is not available non-sports children that again I think is another push towards eventually having a PE. 7 and again it might end up that way that might be the best way for us to offer that but we're going to have to wait and see AP and honors discussions limited sports for certain courses there limited spots for certain courses will there be an even distribution of opportunities to all students who want to can take at least one higher level course supposed to there are not there are not limited spots in in the sense that I think people are talking about there are limits so let's talk about that briefly we currently have one teacher who is how to teach AP US History that's Peter boccone we are looking to train additional people so that we could potentially offer more sections but right now we have a cap and I use that term very Loosely of five sections five sections would say a 25 to 30 kids per section that would generally get you the whole class just about but let's say it doesn't let's say we have a few more then we could ask Miss pacconi if you wanted to teach a 6 V so that's additional. Instead of his prep so that's one possibility another is you could have somebody who's not trained in a p a t h. Course under the tutelage of Serpico me if they were so inclined and if we thought that their skills were to the level that would want them having that opportunity we could also get the data back thanks to Carlos doing all this work so ahead of time with the counselors and go I think somebody wrote this in the Chatham might have been Jane we're going to need a bigger boat we got like there's trainings this summer maybe we can send one of our other teachers to that training they can work van with mr. boccone we could add another section there's ways for us to doing that we're always looking at tightening the opportunities and not cutting anybody off and call us and I have a lot of talks about what if we have an extra kids do we open up in section how do we manage that you know we have five full sections within 10 extra so for us that's about do we overload a couple of those sections do we open up another section and then set the get a little bit more so those are questions and and and thought so we have to be thinking about the entire time and those are those are questions that were already looking at their some courses right now and we're going through right now and then putting all formulas in there and and seeing what the potential sections are in right now and we're really trying to do is to get the students data and predict the future and and then we'll will allocate the Staffing where the sections are and there's a quick question I do need to run over and talk with the counselors I know they're very busy I don't I don't want to waste their time but AP Psychology has been coming up a couple questions I think I'm misconceptions in here about students taking a peek at Psychology outside and our our policy this is to honor AP Psychology we need to know about it as Jason said so prior to registering for that course we have a form on our website and we ask that family issues that form and AP Psychology credit is is honored for our our policy and in terms of that looking forward to to next year we are going to have a form of ailable that any course that you're considering taking outside of San Marino High school that is not part of our dual enrollment articulation program you have to ask permission or it's either we're also not just going to except we know we questions we came in with Carlos and I are new to the school obviously as well why do we take a pea-sized but we don't take AP World History okay but we don't offer AP World History by the way we are offering an extra so Pas cuz there is a cool seminar Capstone program through a that is basically a student research project which I don't know why we don't know okay so for us it's never we're not going to be in the business park blondes this class always goes on because again that doesn't allow us to effectively meet the needs of our students which is our role I think that there's a potential for us to offer AP psych as a senior elective I think a lot of our seniors would take it so weird looking at how we could manage that not for next year but it could be something in the very near future that makes its way onto our schedule same with AP Euro the same way with AP Euro it's just something that we have to do because we need to know where our kids are going what they want to do what Their interests are and how we can meet those interest in the best way possible and maybe a just is you know what Psych is there something you can take outside of the school because we're never going to be able to fit in and that's that's okay too but we want to get the data so we know and that's something that has come out of a lot of the work we've done this year maybe there's a good reason why we don't know why so let's collect as much information as we can so that whatever decision we make whether it's to move forward as we always have our to make a shift we can understand the effects of that okay and with that it's 10:12 I don't see any dramatically new questions I think we'll have to do maybe another one of these on honors and AP access and I think that might be helpful but I really am initiate everybody's time today I appreciate the questions and please remind all of your friends at this does get posted online it will be in my email on Monday so everyone will have access and until then please stay safe hopefully we get a nice little patch of weather here it's warm enough at the beach so might take a little siesta down at the beach today I don't know if we'll get that warm but we'll see all right everybody take care bye bye
