all right good morning everyone is fine just so everyone's aware I'm recording the session so you're thinking of getting crazy or anything on there just remember this is for posterity stuff manage yourself all right we've got a few questions that we got from yesterday's email and then we've got some building up in the chat which is fine I'm going to let you all know that I will be looking for a different day of the week because I understand that Tuesdays are also Huntington Middle School's PTA meeting around the same time so we might have just the day we might have just the time but trying to find an optimal place for this tool and soda most people can attend so it's good to some of the bigger things course we're week into actual teaching and learning the last week was our first full week of instruction getting a lot of good feedback, but we're also really concerned about screen time so we're talking with our staff about what instruction looks like online now and we're talking about how to make expectations were looking at building Community Connection and really using this as an opportunity for students and the teachers to connect it's also to get through content Buttrey need to work together so we're in the past we might have been going to class and really gathering information to use later on we're really seeing more of a focus on let's take the information that we have whether that's something that we read last night or information that we gathered together over previous lessons and use it together during the time that we have this allows for a lot of trouble shooting with the teacher and allows students to not be so drawn into their camera and actually may be working in a different area of the home may be at their desk maybe on paper and then just using the teacher in the class online with them as a resource to move their understanding forward who really encouraging that as a matter of fact one of my English teachers reached out to me today really concerned about screen time and about how soon to take but just the fatigue toward the end of the day where kids are just kind of leaned in like this and the suggestion was we pair the synchronous with the a sink how come go outside annotate something maybe in their backyard get some sunshine just get away from the computer and then come back absolutely that's something that we want to encourage that they're not just locked into their computer I see this as a classroom with the door that's open so by the teacher having the video and the audio on at all times and students in at all times they're just in the classroom together now awesome X if you've ever been on a thriving school campus you'll have teachers who say ya feel free to move to a different area of the groom sometimes they share do they have a common space that's right outside their classroom and they'll allow kids to go to that common space we can still manage and see them but they're away from the larger group are connected as a smaller group or sometime an individual lie cuz they can focus a little better so we're just figuring these things out and we're trying different things and we are there to call it to stretching ourselves and we don't want to get out over our skis and then and then humble but that will happen from time to time that's okay we're trying to find the best way to manage all of these expectations getting through the curriculum on providing great activities but not overwhelming students is everything we have the students submit online we have to then review online and that can also make for an exceedingly long day for anyone who's done a lot of tsums are a lot of Google meet so that's kind of where we are right now I just want to touch on attendance again attendance is a big issue if you've read any of the bills that have come out regarding distance learning over the last there's a huge focus on a tennis in this isn't for any other reason than that is the major way that public schools are funded it's how many people show up to school each day and then they do sort of it average of that gives you your average daily attendance funding well of course that was kind of suspended through covid-19 so let's say it's a marina we have 3000 kids last year that's what we're refunded at whether we have 2829 hundred or 3200 they're going to they're going to find us at 3000 chips you want us to continue to take a tenant man in the law there's a lot of ambiguity about what it means to attend school in a distance model because we have synchronous and straw the high school going all five days we expect that students will be logged in and attending all five days and that's what we're counting as our attendance now for those of you who have connectivity issues which there have been many and we are noticing the Spectrum has several issues in managing the expectations that we placed on them we are of course still meeting to Mark the kids as absent there and really all we're saying when we're taking attendance is there either in the room or not in the room that's it snow judgment there it's just I can't say you were here if you want but there's a whole host of reasons many of which are completely out of our control now that would be in the room so that's why we created that online attendance form so that you can just simply go on say on August 25th I was absent connectivity issue it's very much that simple if you do have a note to submit something like a doctor's note maybe you had to go to an actual doctor's appointment or dentist appointment you can upload that it will go straight to our attending Gina and she will clear that out since just like we always done so we're trying to make it very simple and very structured because I know that that is a huge concern for many parents right now as it is for teachers as well the the other thing with regard to attendance is that I don't want people to worry when they get notices from either a phone call because we do have that system or a an email this is just us providing you information about your child today it's not a referendum on we're going to be chasing you down and making you come to class and doing all those things if it becomes an issue we will be reaching out to you personally I'm either through our counselors through me perhaps mr. Who's in the back of the house running our attendance reports with Gina but I don't want people to be worried about we know that there are a host of reasons that you cannot control us why your kid couldn't attend for the day but part of that bill also says that we have to have a process by which we are monitoring managing info coming and engaging our families to attend school on a so we're using the tools that we've had which help us manage that the best so if you ever have any questions about that course reach out to your counselor I miss your ear ear myself but again just use that online form and as long as you're telling us this is what happens we're going to be able to clear those absences alright let's take a look at some of the questions that we got over the course of the last 24 hours let's start with schoology so this first question 11th and 9th grader state of the schools he's been difficult to follow keep track of assignments frustrated States not organized they preferred Google classroom is there a platform to take suggestions from students and teachers to keep updating the schoology to make it more user-friendly and efficient the only platform would be to actually talk to these specific teacher about their classroom platform in Schoology I will say the Google Classroom is much simpler to use because it's a much simpler platform you just really can't do that much on it and that's typical of open-source programs Google Classroom is pretty much open source people create add-ons for Google classroom and that just means they write a program that enhances a portion of Google Classroom then you have to add it on when we started using will meat last year a lot of people came out with very quick and simple add-ons for Google me so I one day grab as many of them as I could test them out functionally about maybe 2% of them actually worked their very buggy because they're not actually created by Google their created by anyone who wants to write the code and then you add them on so why we went to schoology was twofold one it has been around for a very long time it has been used by many schools school districts and teachers as well as many in San Marino not call but many teachers especially at the middle school science department in the high school history Department have been using it some of the Great and it was purchased by PowerSchool so there was an instantaneous for a way in which the information to be shared back and forth it's going to be a little bit challenging for us to use I think in the first month especially because it is the first time that many of our staff are using it as their main platform at least to get started I have been taking a couple of emails from students right now where they've asked us to enhance them tonality of school G and I pushed those forward to our tech department and they can either make it happen because it's a possibility on RN to make an adjustment or they provide feedback to PowerSchool in Schoology so right now it would be first to start with your teacher because your teacher is the one who manages that portion of the classroom and then it would be to submit any sort of request through our texts apartment which is on our website as well okay let's take a look at the the next question is there certain amount of minutes per grade for a class of students should be working synchronously live interaction dialogue with teachers and students so what are the total minutes soon should be spending during the school day concerned that interaction is mostly daily YouTube videos minimal time of 5 interaction dialogue with teacher really in terms of what they're using I'm I'm hopeful that it's not all YouTube but I'm going to take that into consideration and maybe that person can reach out to me specifically but let's look at in general in general we have our school day right now which is Monday through Thursday 8:30 to 2:30 all 6. With 50 minutes for each the expectations for students and teachers is that during this 15 minutes your video is on now what year doing within that 50 minutes is going to vary wildly and widely based on what you're learning that day and the expectation for the activities from the teacher that day so I'll give you the example of chemistry had a great conversation with Miss Chubbuck last week where she talked about how they are regularly in breakout rooms they are regularly solving problems together as small groups with her dropping in checking for understanding providing guidance and feedback as they go around as she goes around to each of the individual group but then there's also miss linton's math class where there is a lot of direct teaching because a lot of that math is very new to students and you have to understand that there is different from the season procedures that you're going to need to do and going into sort of and a discovery mode of mathematics is not going to be very useful in the short-term because we have a search curriculum that we have to get through in certain amount of time is now have a large Great Dane right now trying to get in the way of the work I'm doing so that's going to just depend based on what you're learning what's a teacher has set up and the expectations in terms of what needs to be accomplished in that day I would say that the number one thing you could do is reach out to a specific teachers through students and ask questions about the expectations for that class next question students are reporting that Zoom fatigue is real will you consider going back to a block schedule like last spring instead of six hours of Zoom if you look more like three hours of Zoom the first hour would be zoomed in a synchronous so yeah screen fatigue is real I get it or teachers are getting it and that's why what we're doing is managing and I'm calling it managing expectations you cannot expect somebody to be on Camp on camera for 6 hours you can try it you won't get very much out of them after the first 20 minutes so instead eating on Zoom so it would be like me talking for the next 6 hours you trying to listen to me for the next 6 hours we're not trying to do that what we're doing is offering on teachers the Opera Kennedy and the ability to decide what is most necessary and appropriate for their class with the understanding that we also have parents who say you need to be online my kid because when you're not online with my kid even though you say go do the asynchronous work the kids aren't doing the asynchronous work or they're letting it stack up and then they're trying to get it all done and nighttime and they're not engaging with the learning during the school day so there's a balance there as I said one of our teachers asked could we login take attendance do a quick five here's what we're focusing on today keep the cameras on and then tell our students take your book find a comfortable spot and I want you to and read and annotate the next chapter and then we're going to meet back again in front of camera in 20 minutes yes that's a great idea that get you away from your camera away from your computer you're still in the classroom right classroom still open I'm here as the teacher you I'll be reading come to a section you're utterly confused you're not focus when you come back and say hey mr. fernbach I know you said read for 20 minutes I have a quick question yep I'm right here right here we're good okay thank you mr. kurtenbach I'm done then you can go by maybe it's Outback in your in your in your backyard maybe it's sitting on the couch with your dog maybe whatever it is where you're feeling a little more comfortable that you're away from your screen we're encouraging those types of behaviors remember where one week one weekend and we can't have a referendum on one week we can give feedback and that feedback is helping inform us to make better decisions as we move forward but we're not going to just throw everything out because we've done one week and and we didn't like parts of it I'm so we're making adjustments as we go along if a student knows they will be missing class for an they complete the absence form to notify the school prior to deployment absolutely would be great just like we would if you knew you had a doctor's appointment definitely informed the school early use that link Gina will take care of that and it will be updated and Wilson teacher will know not to expect. So we figured out the cheer and dance thing cheer otherwise known as Pap is during 6. Dance Company is after school so there should no longer be a conflict and our pets teacher and her dance teacher on the same page with that do the week of Havoc with poor online services and outages absences and tardies were abundance how are you guaranteed citizenship grades will not be affected on students transcripts in past years teacher Lord citizenship grades for 3 hours and even when they related to doctor's appointments my suit with my support cannot petition to dispute the administration house admission public different that's a good question so right now we are as I said one weekend and we're trying to understand what we know and what we don't know so the attendance issue is they say the earlier is still one that's slightly nebulous because of the way the state asked us to take attendance this year so we're going to be doing a lot of work around understanding that especially in the first quarter as I said before I don't want to I'm freaking out about attendance because it's a different way of doing things I'm never going to offer a guarantee so I like that you ask that but I'm never going to guarantee that things will not be affected by other things I'm not that powerful would that I were but I'm not so I'm going to take a look at that as we get about a quarter in we're looking at it every week working with staff which we've had kind of a limited capacity around here but we're also working with our it Department Eric negrilla who is our leader in the IT department in terms of cow pass that's the place that we have to report call Bar attendant and they're very specific ways in which we can and cannot report attendance so I work with him I work with the other principles because we all want to be on the same page and doing the same thing from K3 12 as it relates to attendance because it is very critical that we get that right how it affects citizenship and how it affects going on the transcript is another thing and I'm what I'm understanding from the statement is that citizenship goes on the transcript which is unusual for me in my past life as a high school principal we reported grades not necessarily citizenships I'll take a look at that as well but I don't want anybody worried about that right now we should do our best to attend every day that we can if not we should be submitting absence notes through our Google form which is on our website and then clearing those so that they'll be marked once an absence is excused shouldn't have I don't think an effect on citizenship because things that are excused it wouldn't make as much sense to me but I'm going to do some work around that the status of math math team we are not stripping the school of extracurriculars we have continued in my knowledge all of our extracurriculars I will follow up with me team but I I don't I don't see us I haven't stopped any extracurriculars if we've not run a sport after school it's had everything to do with whether or not the coach it's going to run the sport and if they're not I wish seeking others to run it instead SAT and ACT Testing for juniors and PSAT for sophomores in the state of Calif you cannot run sat or act we're not allowed to bring anyone in for testing the PSAT and I checked with all of our surrounding districts to the best of my abilities and no one is running it that is an October day we have no confidence that we will be able to bring students in and in Mass to do any testing whatsoever so as of right now we are not running PSAT I don't know of any air is it in California right now that are running sat or act but I'm continuously trying to reach out again to college board and act right now on the College Board website as I was and yesterday looking at the fee waivers and looking at dates and looking for guidance from them as to how we might be able to do it they have removed all of their phone numbers because they will not take a phone call anymore because they're getting in and date because some states are open and some states like us are pretty much closed which means that they can't actually run the SAT act or so I'm going to keep you updated with that but right now we are not planning to run the PSAT we have no way of doing so that is a safe and sanitary way that follows the Department of Public Health and the governor's orders back to synchronous sessions too long to attend on a day-to-day basis suggesting Monday Wednesday and Friday and then Tuesday and Thursdays asynchronous 23 hours a week of screen time is too yeah so we've discussed this it is on our leadership meeting for tomorrow that's with all the principals dr. Wilson Etc will be talking about that song tomorrow afternoon one of our suggestions would be to let it go for another 2 weeks get us through Labor Day so we have a good breath of time where we've been able to we understand and make some subtle adjustments and then perhaps a survey our community and see how they're feeling about the structure that again that would be something we'd have to work with our staff are different associations and our community on about whether or not we need to make changes and adjust our expectations in terms of synchronous asynchronous instruction is that in its import trust and know that when we say you know let's let's back off of some of the synchronous construction let's focus a little more on a synchronous let's reduce the amount of screen time all that comes with a commiserate loss of learning and we all have to understand that there's a group of students who are going to be just fine if you give them some task or activity and you give them some moderate support in accomplishing that task or activity or understanding that concept or skill but then there are most students and I and I mean this with I'd say at least 50% of students going to struggle with that human beings are not very good at disciplining themselves to do things that they AA might not want to do in the beginning and be don't have somebody making sure they're doing when they should my best example is that is when I continue to exercise and my friends stopped once we went into covid-19 weather every morning at 5 everyone came back and started to be more disciplined because they had a connection to somebody with an expectation that an action would take place I'm not saying kids are like this I said very clearly at least 50% of our kids will really struggle in an environment where for a full day let's say Tuesday and Thursday they're not expected to log in their expected to maybe complete a task will they be completing the task I'll probably be logging in with their friends they will probably be doing the work together not a bad thing but it definitely changes to learn it and that means it changes how much we can get who in the year so understand that up until March of last year we had a hundred and eighty days of curriculum that we were planning on getting through we had 54 minutes her. Her day today do that on average we cut that down significantly but there is still an expectation that we will get through a Year's worth of curriculum so we're trying to manage that in a way that is supportive students and teachers and families so this feedback is important don't think that we're not thinking about these things and just because we're not promoting different ideas at this point doesn't mean that we're not having this discussion again we need to make sure that we are not just throwing everything out because it didn't work this week we are constantly having conversations among staff and among the district about how is this word and how can we maybe move it a little bit in this direction as I said earlier maybe not having face-to-face but having the ability with the classroom open teachers video on teachers audio on but giving the kids too to where they could step away from their computer for a moment do something different for the class and then bring that back I even take the hard I think it was mr. Barton who said he set up his room so that he can have the computer open the kids can see him but he can back away from it I know I miss Davidson wears her headphones with her mic and it's wireless which allows her to take a wide shot the classroom speed be heard very clearly by her entire students on on camera but it doesn't require her to be right here so that allows her to get a little bit more animated maybe pulse and different things come to the board for kids to see to share in that helps create some dynamism and gets her up I know she teaches I think standing most of the day still because she's adjusted her environment that way one thing I get you a pair of yesterday who emailed me was I encourage them to provide an opportunity for their kids to stand up so I'll show you my example I have this on my desk I've had this for years and now I can see and into my work standing for the rest of the time with you that's very helpful to me as we all know if we sit there and we're sitting there's not a lot of Animation inactive you spell I find myself around one having to shake myself awake a little bit so I would encourage you if that just grabbing a box so that your child can pick your laptop off set it on the box and you stand up for me that's the little device that I have cost me $70 in the best investment I can travel with it anywhere I've taken it home so I can use it there too ready to say you know what I need to stand up for a moment or being able to have a cheap raised in the chat that says I need a break or I need to run to the restroom they're going to take a lap around the house and come back to stretch that's okay to wear encouraging my teachers to give those breaks within the classroom well and they're able to recognize you know they're meeting people online going okay we're getting disconnected let's stop for a minute we're going to do something goofy maybe watch the principal singing a song again we're going to last for a second and then we're going to come back and try to focus again so we're learning to manage all of this pain continue with the fee but understand that we're not going to be making massive changes immediately we're going to do this slowly over time so that we don't lose anything good that we're having in making the right I'm going to jump into the chat Aaron talk about some of the things that are here the first one wants you to invite mr. Tom car here, are you online yeah I'm here can you guys hear me yeah yeah. okay great I got a few minutes here so I'll try to run through this my name is Tom Koch and I just joined the foundation and as a volunteer trip and my wife Patty and I have been in San Marino for 20 years I have four kids have gone through Valentine for kids have gone through the middle school two of them went to San Marino High school and graduated and I've currently got a sophomore at the high school so even though I'm just joining the foundation now I've been involved in you know donating and then obviously been involved in the schools for a long time and my reason for wanting to get involved now is you know kind of the severity of the financial situation that we have and to try to you know jump send as much as I can into try to rally support in the community and I'm so excited to give my time for what I think is really an essential cause and I think you're going to be hearing everyone's going to be bring a lot more from the foundation about the foundation I think as it tries to do more community outreach simply because it's essential and there really isn't a choice we have to raise this money on a continuous basis so it's extremely important and the first thing I just want to say you know a huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the annual campaign and to the we are San Marino campaign and people who donated this year through the first day packet that's really important no more days coming up the year giving days and things of that nature as we go through the year to try to prompt people and continue to Rally the community around the support and the support that was shown in the we are campaign was really unprecedented it was kind of a record-high which is fashion which is awesome so you know they're basically so real quick fruit for those who don't know the foundation is a non-profit organization I'm just treating you the mission statement with the purpose of providing financial support to the district and helping sure Samuel schools reach their adjectives so it is an independent is independent of the of the school board and it really is just a a money raising arm so there's no there's no involvement in policy and and all the other thing School Board as it's just we need money so let's go out and try to rally and raise money and they're 17 trustees like myself and you know the funding goes to again continue to provide an excellent education and continue to allow our district to be you know what top rated district and you know I'll just say personally having to my kids that graduated from the high school both went on to college one still in college 130 graduated college I will say and we also my family works with an outside kind of college counselor a little bit and she does work with all the other schools anuria and it is very clear that colleges know and recognize San Marino for the strength of the education the strength of the program so that's really reassuring to know and you know my kids were really why prepared and sew in no kind of looking back the experience I can bring is that and what I'd like to convey is that you know the education really is really good so the goal is to continue to raise money and support the 34 teaching programs district-wide other 34 teaching programs that the foundation is it is currently helping to support and fund 12 of them were at the high school so there's been seven that I've always been Foundation is funded and then we're additional five that were fun to make sure that we are San Marino campaign so if you want to doing this on an annual basis and and and not have this upheaval every year with no teachers through you know that the threat of teachers getting fired and then being able to stay on to our sport you know we just need to keep the bar as high as it is and and and leaving build up on that so if anyone's not familiar with the foundation the website is www.sis msf for San Marino School navigation. Org you know again we will I am a I'm Aaliyah's on basically working with the high school since my son Truman and sophomore and so I will I am a few other people in my same position will be hopefully forming little groups and committees to continue to go out and do the Outreach into the community to raise the funds so let me do be real quick so I hit on these points so anyway as far as that the kind of why donate I mean we we again had a had a high dissipation rate to petition participation if I can stay this moved up from say, 50% up into like 2/3 area which is great we'd really like to drive that to 3/4 to 80% so obviously 100% I mean we get 100% people exist Spade whatever the number is that's the goal so we're making progress we're going the right direction and that's great but we've got more room to go so I think that's the quick wrap-up and if you guys have question I don't know Jason you have time now or anyone can get get ahold of me or get ahold of anybody at the foundation time do you want to leave your current information in the chat sure absolutely you want to type that in or even the foundation's contact information and people will know how to get ahold of you thank you so much yeah I cannot impress upon people how much more important that's going to be as we move forward we will see next year I will likely a dramatic and significant reduction in funding a I wish I could 10% hit across the board as a state in terms of public education this year the tax revenues are going to obviously be way lower and we've had some significant cost of living issues happen we've had a lot of people start to move out of the state and there is going to be probably a worse Outlook when we get to our funding next year for those of you who want to pay attention to that you want to look at the governor's budget which will come out around January they will always have a huge focus on education and it's one of the major funding cases for any governor and then they will do a May revise so there's two dates that we started get really focused on and that's in January when the first budget comes out and then in May when there's a revised hopefully after some better news Financial it but we are expecting it to be much lower again this year and there will be an adjustment based on whatever attendance rules they decide to put in place for next year as well so we're definitely going to be in a challenging situation but of course nothing we can't get out of but it's going to be another another one but hey we're used to it we can handle it all right so just a few of the questions in the chat and we can get through yes PowerSchool is still up and any connectivity issues that anyone had yesterday Zoom as a platform, didn't go down but it was struggling Google the the actual platform went down which is unusual I think that a lot of districts are coming online and a lot of these systems are getting pushed well beyond what even they were I do in March so that was an issue PowerSchool. I've just logged in myself it is up and running in a jump pass some of the things we've already talked about replacement books famous cribs Who's online there's Debbie who's I told the store yesterday on Friday probably one of those days in the year we're handing books out it's just Debbie and late asking me who is our Health Clerk and then some Michelle quiroz get all the traffic stopped moving we're backed up I grabbed Sonia as I walk out there I see but miss cribs family he's just like all hands on deck was show up and help out and we work till almost 5 or trying to get books out but we understand that some people weren't able to get all their books so we're going to ask you to please reach out famous cribs that the cribs I'll type it in the chat if you still need a book and we're going to make sure that you get that we have books in the big gym will still be able to have nose out but we're going to do it little bit more methodical ways to send an email to Debbie crib saying I here's the book I need and we'll make sure that we get that out to you but to me one of the most fun days of course I was exhausted I don't think I've ran not much in the heat for a while even my dog was like this is ridiculous he came back to the office is like I'm done I'm not playing with you no more but we did a great job I thought everybody was really patience to thank you for the status of jazz band we're still work getting the schedule when we did schedule request last year we only for students who requested it so it did not get placed is typically a second semester class so Mister leave is working on getting students who are interested in getting that list to me and they're going to find a spot for it that hopefully we can get into the schedule let me see here question about courses that are seven. This year can we assume it'll be the same for next year I would say as far as the master schedule goes I wouldn't assume anything's going to stay the same very generally I'm finding a lot of issues that I don't want to have and I don't want our kids to have again and most of it has to do with access and opportunity and balance so we're going to do a top-to-bottom review of that and we are going to our goal is Argo also will ambitious is to have our entire master schedule with all of our courses loaded and all of our students schedules done before we go to summer break so that everybody will know weather supposed to be when they come back there won't be started this summer of I wonder what I'm going to be taking in and teach you're saying we can do that it just means that that's something we have to focus I think that'll be helpful when you're walking off in the summer going I know which classes I'm going to take next year I know which ones I want to take this summer and I can't enter relax now I think that'd be helpful for everybody but there will be some structural changes because we want to make sure that if you want to take a class and we can manipulate our schedule in such a way that we can get that for you but that happens and we want to make sure that our staff can manage all those expectations cuz when you're teaching multiple classes and means that you're preparing for multiple classes which means you cannot focus nearly as well on some passing. Of 3 minutes I think that means on Friday yeah we've heard that that's also on my list of discussions with our leadership team to see if there's a possibility of extending that the extension of it would need to be taking away behind in class because we cannot reach into the different areas so I'll look at that we'll see if we can maybe instead of having that 13 minutes extra break in the middle maybe we go to J longer breaks in between each class we can have a discussion around that but that has been brought up not just by staff and parents with students as well attendance form can I stick a link in the chat but I'm going to navigate away from you all for a second to do that so I can grab the link if you went to San Marino High School's website it's on the right hand side it's called reporting student absence actually I can use my share screen feature so then everybody can see where this is I can only manage I never thought I'd want more screens sure screen here we go okay so you're on the San Marino High School website and you can see as I scroll report a student absence and when you click on that it takes you right to our Google form which I will copy and drop into the chat feel free to bookmark that because that way it will be available for you at all times I bookmark that and I bookmark of the Tobin screener that I have to fill out every day I come in so that's on my phone and then I can check and manage the absence reports as well hey Jason second child wasn't absent but was marked absent he still for that the phone is there a place to put cumin you can put it in the other section and they're not Gina can follow up on that definitely you're welcome see if we have any more questions in here oh yeah I scrolled too far sorry on homework and trying to take down to it have you given any directions to how much homework is appropriate with distance learning a lot of conversations around homework you are. that has to do with again getting into the first week and the understanding that the environment that were in where is it's sort of acting like a pseudo class for its of course much different and it's a management technique and we're trying to see what is that mean for us when we're assigning outside work a lot of staff at talked about we're trying to get a lot of call work. a lot of the activity that I would expect from my kids done while they have access to me synchronously and then they can complete that as they leave class now whether that's at night or the next day in class is determined by the teacher but the challenging part is you know 90% of the stuff we're assigning unless you're reading your your novel in English I was going to put you back online so we're really trying to make adjustments but at the same time we don't want to lose the ability to move the content forward so I'm interested in getting feedback I know the staff is as well and we're talking about how they can regularly check in not just the students but with parents cuz often times kids will say I did way to over stress I was doing this is doing that and talk to parents say well yeah they they were probably stressed but they also spent you know two hours online gaming so that was some screen time there as well even though it's different because you're relaxed you're doing something different so please continue to give us some feedback on that specific to each teacher because it's different for every kid as well and one of the hard Parts about homework is what could take me and online it takes me 15 minutes that's the same activity for somebody who's not really comfortable using these platforms it could take them an hour because they're trying to navigate I don't even know where to go or how to do this thing and it's the first time I've ever I do this thing online so we have to give a little bit of Grace with but always be communicating the outcome because the expectation could be in for me with my son so tech-savvy he tells me stuff he's done and I don't even pay attention to him cuz I can't understand what the heck you saying is you and if you told me to do that it probably take me to figure it out so keep communicating with your teacher specifically we don't want to cover everybody with a blanket generalization. There's just too much homework overall maybe the way and with the teachers having to do homework in this environment is creating a can undo level for your particular student and that is an adjustment that we should be able and need to make will there be a parent and student survey yeah we're going to talk about that with the leadership team tomorrow that is one of the things that we have on our list related to homework has any benchmarking been done to ensure the quizzes test that is occurring is appropriate for the online format I guess definition of benchmarking for me hears everything an quiz or test that we do online is inherently not go be as secure standardized or clear in terms of what is learned or not learned is it would be in a classroom as he said when we started this Journey 2 months ago together I could have I said huge TV over here in the corner I have my phone here I have access to several computers out there I could have a book open there's no way that you're going to be able to secure the test or the quiz environment so we talk about with our staff having small assessments having small quizzes small checking for understanding right towards the end of class not necessarily times but if you are going to time it hits one and it gets to the heart of what you learn that fixed and it doesn't have to be a right or wrong it can simply be Identify some of the concepts that you fully understood today that we discussed identify hi in English where how far to flatten wood floor where do we taking a look at a particular character and telling us how that character Gru today from what we read something that gets to the heart of what needed to be and that day that can be quickly entered in by a student in and verified by the by the teacher but then beyond that it's looking at can we do things that are mostly focused on project-based what can be done over a long. Of time that will synthesize a lot of learning together that pairs of students allows them to share information and share so that the work they should be some focus on that. we keep going to hear you only have about 8 minutes is the school ready to switch to hybrid teaching once it can be reopened again ready as an intro word is it ready it would be it would be an interesting shift but I had a conversation with one of our counselors this morning and the question was how confident are we that we're going to be back in spring so the resulting statement I made was I think we have zero chance of coming back in the fall I think we have about a 50/50 chance of coming back when is spring although I'm worried about our vacation time because once we all go on vacation everybody gets sort of re-exposed to new people and and vacation being thanked living in winter break I think that if we do come back it's going to be because the state change the the expectation so I think somebody's going to say you know what we can have it be 100 or 100. we have to have it 204 100,000 and then people can go back to school or something like that in the case that that happens we're going to need to understand how many parents want to come so that we can know how we can manage number of kids were coming to campus yes 100% of our kids want to come back then we have to split the schedule which we can do if only half the kids want to come back then the half the kids want to come we just make sure that we have enough space in each room and we have to manage those things based on you know it's only 500 kids but if it's the 500 kids and they all seem to be taking the same size classes then we have to put them up so are we ready yes on I feel like we can pull that off here probably with a week's work worth of actual work and that would mean knowing which kids are coming in and scheduling them appropriately so that their social existence but ready is a weird word right because I need to know which kids I need to know what new parameters I'll bet they'll be new expectations and new guidelines from the state and the County Department of Health by the way the governor's orders konflict currently with the Department of Public House orders for so we're kind of allowing those two to fight right now because they are and we have to deal with the outcome because the Department of Public Health said that if you are practicing outside and you can maintain physical distance of between six and eight feet you can bring a sports back to your campuses and your clothes but the governor said no you can so we have these two entities both appreciate power saying that we could do two different things and we're place in the middle so we're waiting for them to figure that out so yes we are ready but we need more information once we are told we can do that so that we do it the way that is legal and safe some other questions in here regarding Friday what happens during the asynchronous time from 12 to 2 on Friday test taking group projects so asynchronous is essentially I give you an activity and you need completed by a specified. Of time to demonstrate your Mastery of skills and Concepts generally the work it's going to be provided to them will have to be demonstrated to be complete before the end of the day it may be something that could be turned in potentially on Monday it could be something that is a quiz I don't know why platform that I feel comfortable using in terms of a quiz it could be a short writing piece could be just about anything but it is independent classwork time definitely there asynchronous equals independent class work time for students right yes unless the teacher is needed for office hours appointments or drop him yeah they I don't know the full availability that everybody is giving on this route afternoons but I know some teachers are running additional office hours every day as a matter of fact I've been on several meets with teachers who said it's 2:30 now I have to go I have the office hours so they're adding those on they think they need to thank you Miss Todd's I think teachers are doing a great job I'm I'm constantly amazed at the the new stuff they're coming up with I never even conceptualize and some people have said oh you could do it if you had to Jason and I'm like I'm not sure that I could I've been out of the daily teaching game for so long I actually cut class for our dance teacher the first day of school and I felt a little raising my heart rate knowing that before so I think they're doing a great job and they're always looking to get better we actually met on Friday Friday and Thursday after work at about 2:30 they ran a San Marino High School happy hour which meant everybody jumped on his zoom and all we're doing is sharing different things we learned that week about using schoology in a new way new platforms on the show me something called a jamboard I don't know if you've ever seen that but it's basically a shared whiteboard through Google so you can assign it to kids just like a Google doc and then people could write on the Whiteboard just like you would in a classroom and you can put a little Post-it notes up there so I learned a new thing that day in and we shared that with everybody so those things are happening all the time and that's the way that we get better is by being able to share those senior parents school will send the report card for the last semester are report cards whenever sent out they are available in PowerSchool they are digital struggle remember where they are but I can tell you every parent has access and it's I think it's called MBM as in mother b as in boy a report it's on the inside NBA report and it is the report card from last year contact Miss Sonia coronavirus and I will put her email in the chat is a registrar and she's responsible for getting us transcripts very soon we are going to have a way for you to request a transcript digitally and have it sent by emails to something called parchment we're just having a challenging times finding set up availability because we need our tax department to do that and of course there focus is understandably on schoology and distance learning not on transcripts through a new program right now so with that I am going to say it is 10:01 I mean
