right now because we want to post this for posterity later on and we want to have the rest of community have access cuz not everyone can make it to our morning meetings I'm so thank you so much for being here I just want to let you know that we will have plenty of time for questions at the end but we do have some guests coming in today and before we get started though we're going to try a new breathing technique I need this cuz just came out of a training for an hour and jumping right into another zoom on this will give me a second to kind of relax and get myself oriented back into our meeting here so this is called six I weeded box breathing last time this is again very short and I won't take up too much of our time but I think we'll get us ready for the work we're going to do today so here we go he should be back is it very quick way to get us ready for any work we're about to do specially when we're heading into long periods or we're going to be on zooms which today will be for many of us so first I'd like to welcome to speak to us today our PTSA president miss Helen Kim Spitzer so how long are you there nice photo I haven't seen that in a while welcome parents of seniors I don't think I have to give the same talk I gave last week to our new parents but as you know lpgsa is here for you new students and families the special s includes students in our organization unlike the other campuses and this year we're in distance learning or at least the start of it we are still doing our programs and we are still supporting our students and teachers and administration on campus so thank you all of you for joining and participating and being a part of our body skip or I just wanted to highlight a couple of things coming up before I pass it to our great grad night chairs will be talking about grad night which is scheduled or the end of this year we have a Reflections contest coming up I'm the due date is October 10th at sorry Friday October 9th so please remind your students that this is a great program that features a sponsors and this year you can upload entries electronically as well you don't have to come to the district office to do the drop off but you can do that as well we continue to great options I'm also as part of the parent party this year we are find to take things down a notch and not put any extra pressure on our parents our community and so we're doing the great tight and take out and I to schedule for Wednesday October 14th and thought is to support our local businesses who have historically supported our community and all the PTA of the four schools and Star first one will be with Tony's Pizza RI near to campus long time restaurant so please take that flyer either in paper form or digitally and go to Tony's Pizza on Wednesday October 14th take the day off I'm making lunch and or dinner it'll work at either time. And I support our local business as well as the PTSA so one thing that we are planning and we're hopeful for to do in purse is the Titan golf tournament it is scheduled for late April and as we get the detail will be sending that out to you soon there will be a save-the-date flyer or notice or email coming out soon so very excited that we will be able to get together as a community in person hopefully this spring and you know Breeze fun and fundraising it may look a little different but I think we can do it and we cross our fingers and wherever hopeful there are other things that are PTSA support programs especially for our seniors I wanted to highlight that there is a PTSA scholarship and more information about that will come out towards the end of the year for any graduating senior that is a member of PTI say there are other requirements and like I said more information will come out but think about that for you and your student that's a great scholarship it's a great way to start that college like I said yes they also supports other programs and events on campus and again specifically for the seniors we support the end of year celebration luau and so we are hopeful that with friends going the way they are and some schools opening hybrid form and so forth in the OC that that that is something that will be able to do get back on campus and be together but we also support teacher appreciation the wish list school spirit link crew pure mentoring we supplement all those programs on campus with funds that we raised through the year and through your donations to thank you and stay positive let us know what we're doing well where you think we can be more helpful I'm always available I'm not sure if there's a chat room if there is be happy to put my email in their reach out to me or any of the executive board members I think there's a generic email for the President also on the school website so have a great year we look forward to seeing you same person in the spring and go titans thank you thank you Helen now I'm inviting in and I think I've seen as I scrolled through our attendees some of our grass Geico chairs so Cynthia Nicollet Alice or Kim if you're there feel free to unmute hi India Arie and I'm your grad night server 2021 along with Nicholas first Alice song and Kim Sutherland and we have been working and meeting throughout the summer to try to figure out the best way to move forward with our grad night class of 2021 as many of you know Kasich 2020 was not able to have their grad night so we are planning on using some of their panels and their decorations or are grad night we've met with the old guard and we've met with the chairs of the class of 2020 and we've decided to focus our theme on a grad night or grad night theme on an underwater type theme with so much unknown and after much to session we've decided to delay our big theme reveal until the students are physically back at school please know that we are working the four of us and everybody behind the scenes were working all different plan a plan B plan C for our seniors and our grad night 2021 and if and when the kids get back to school will be ready and we will make right night 2021 happen in whatever way it is possible so does anybody have any questions or anything for us about it okay you so much and will keep you posted on everything thank you Cynthia thank you Tim now I'd like to bring on our Wellness Center counselor Miss Tanya how Andy is going to give us a little bit more information about how are Wellness Center is able to serve kids during this time so it's not windy on campus but right now virtual so we do have a a way for parents students and teachers to refer students for additional support that link is now available on our website if you go to the high school website and if you click on the right there's the 4th add down you can find the QR code and you can find the link so we're very excited we've got things up and running we have three interns that are available to connect with students we have an additional intern that's going to be starting in January so just continuing to grow as we see the needs and we can act with kids and so it's really helpful if you need someone to reach out to a student as a parent if you have some concerns or perhaps you know part of what's developmentally appropriate what is a might not be sharing everything that they're thinking and feeling and so it's great for us to be able to connect with kids in a confidential way and talk about what's going on with them the other thing is we do offer our weekly workshops in an effort to connect with kids Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 today is our part 2 of Stress Management and then we're really excited as we move into October October is National bullying prevention month and so we're going to have some presentation surround inclusion and really trying to encourage students of how they can connect in this virtual setting and then also just FYI coming up October 30th I believe we are very excited to have a professor dr. Adam Leventhal from USC Keck School of Medicine who's going to be doing a wonderful workshop for parents about vaping so I think that's really exciting because we want to be able to bring some different resources and tools for parents thank you so much Tanya there's so much going on already and I really appreciate that especially the parts about getting their parents and training I think that's very important especially at this time I know we're all dealing with quite a bit please make sure that you're reaching out not just to miss lnd but to your teachers your counselors and me with any issues that you're encountering true distance learning or just dealing with in general because that's why we're here okay now we're getting to the park that you've all been waiting for hopefully cuz we have a lot of senior parents on the line and that is deep dive into Amalfi King's College application letters of recommendation and to lead us through that is going to be one of our fabulous comprehensive counselors Miss Laura I've so Laura are you there I was muted sorry you're not everyone still alive still dealing with those little glitches but yes no thanks I'm so excited to be here and just say hello to our senior parents I know this is such an in time but a bit more apprehensive probably than usual just do two obviously the situations with Cove in so I'm what I've been asked to do is just a quick overview so I'm I go over that I have also a YouTube video that I will share in the chat box a little later it's just a really kind of fun light-hearted overview from one of our local reps are college admissions rep that we've been working with for years so so really with the college application process there is basically three formats the students will be using the first is called the common application and there a artist many many many schools that will be using this format so private schools out of state schools many many schools and we have a program Naviance that we used and that very seamlessly will match up and works very well with common out and then the other very common on application process the students use is the UC application that is separate from common application on so whereas the common application is mainly private schools that can be out-of-state schools as well and sometimes there's public schools that use it the process for open the app includes an essay and oftentimes of letters of recommendation can be used for the Common App schools as well as some supplemental essays now whereas the UC application is a little bit different they do have they call the personal Insight questions which is in a sense of those essays but they do not accept letters of recommendation so they are still holistic in their View they just based their decision on the suit application so we do emphasize to students that is very important that they really reflect themselves an application that we're working on that during senior and then another type of comment of application that many students will be using the score of the CSU and that's our California State University system so that is actually just became available as a yesterday and that process is even a little bit more simplified than the other two so there are no essays and there's no letters of recommendation with that process so there's three separate applications but they're all centralized so a student fills out their basic information one time and can submit two different campuses in different schools there is also sometimes a fourth type of applications due to be doing I'm into Community College and often times it's our local Community College PCC but there is another Central Community College application format called CCC oh so that's what it's a little bit different is it not as much of an application as more is just submitting some basic information and things so and obviously there's no letters and and involved with that as well now one of the thing is probably on many people's minds is the use of test scores is process especially since many of our seniors had hoped to take the spring test last year or the fall this year and soaked in the senior meetings were fine because test were getting canceled many of them have not been able to take the test but not to worry about the counselors all of us we've been meeting with admissions reps and attending Zoo sessions and all of the colleges are well aware basically for the most part it's called test optional and there were many schools that were already test-optional but now it's widespread and includes that you see how do you spell UC system as well to Kelsey system so what that means is if a student has a score they can go ahead and submit it and enter it on their application to self-report but if they don't have discordant then it's optional and the admissions counselors are very clear they're saying that this course could could it lack of scores or if it's maybe not the strongest score could never hurt them reported so he can only enhance an application and not hurt the one with portent thing before I finish talking about the application is then students will go to Naviance and they will have to enter supposed to be replying to so that's a separate from the application itself and I think that's a bit confused so we are using Naviance to send all the edocs and documents so they need College list as well as the deadlines and I think we're going at we have another slide where will we will talk about the various deadlines for colleges so that and I'll and I said I'll give you a YouTube video that was sent to me by one of our local wraps so I think next I'll kind of move on to the next slide which is letters of recommendation process just to clarify that there are two different types of letters that will be submitted to these colleges one is from the counselor the counselor letter is a bit different from the other type of letter witches from teachers so they counselor letter there is no request for that that letter will be automatically written we right for all of the students and we will submit on their behalf without a request monster letters just giving insights into the student and that's why we have them fill out a brag sheet or soda bragging about them to colleges and all the wonderful things their characters just any specific examples though unusual circumstances they may have endured and how they overcame them and and so that's an Essence the counselor letter now there is also many schools are in particular Common App schools will allowed one or two teacher letters as a general rule so the teacher letter is a little different in that it's just more commenting on their academics so some of our seniors have a squirrel can I ask a senior teacher they don't know me that well yes you definitely can and they just have a chance because the teachers are interacting with them on a daily basis they can definitely write a letter for your teacher insights into their academics are there willing to take intellectual Rick's how do they interact the credit questions they ask their curiosity that type of thing so with with the letters the process for what is that we ask students because we're such a small school and teachers sometimes have a limited amount they'll write the students will actually contact the teacher prior to adding them to their Naviance account reach out to them just confirm that they are going to writing and then they go back into nausea and then they can add them to their school principal in the meeting a email last night funny college memes about college application okay so I don't think that was that was the comment so I think Diane in one thing about the navi when the students join the zoom meeting they can't so actually what they can do is can decide which college they want each teacher to submit their letters to so they can select specific colleges sometimes college is only allowed Naviance for April to designate which High School that's an overview of letters of recommendation and then on to the next slide which is the deadlines and so there's there's a few different deadlines but I think the most confusion could be centered around this early action vs. early decision and then you might make sure there's like an early decision one early decision 2 and so so just a bit on that so starting with early decision that is actually what we called binding so if a student decides to apply to an early decision deadline for a college in the sense they're committing to that college already if they get in so that is actually a corresponding forms that the student apparent on the couch the student is committing in a sense to that school and that they will agree that they will cancel any other applications if they've applied is if they get in ISO now hourly action is a bit different early action again is a similar deadline early decision and those typically follow around November 1st early action is not mine so the student can apply early and they can send a strong message at school you know this is the school I'm really interested in recliner Lee and then they still have though the typical timeline to commit to that school which is May 1st what's nicer early action early decision is you find out earlier you don't have to wait until the spring to get your decision usually find out meeting December so within a month or six weeks of submitting the application just one word accident early decision applicants is they do often times have a stronger applicantpool maybe a higher GPA range that the students are so odd to something to be a as they're deciding and then there's something called regular decision and that's typically around January 1st of course it's not eating and they can decide to Cincinnati find out a little bit are so as students are making their decisions about when they want to apply bill again enter that into Naviance now sometimes with early action and early decision students may not get accepted under those deadlines and they may get to fur to the regular pool automatically that's up to the college though so they could apply early action or early decision and just get tonight or they could get deferred to the regular pool so could go either way and then the UC and CSU system now they have their own deadlines and it's all the same it's November 30th although I've heard some campuses I'm not confirmed yet that makes end this just a little bit this year because of all the California fires in all that's been going on. It as a general rule the deadline is November 30th for those campuses hopefully that gave you an overview I don't know if we wanted chance to ask questions or clarify and again as I said I will be putting a link to this video in the chat box if you would like to check it out this particular admissions officer is very entertaining and very light-hearted so and will be able to share them with everybody and that way we can also get some responses from Miss Ives before everyone leaves okay we have one question missiles and maybe you can help us answer the question the cancellation in taking the SAT exam the next one is scheduled on December 4th provided it does not get cancelled is it too late to take that test since the applications are due November 30th excellent question and no it is not too late they will accept the December test for college admissions typically that's fine so yeah hopefully that will go through that would be nice here is a link to the overview video another question maasai's any advice on the essay yes that's that is a big question we could probably just you or we could do a whole nother session maybe that could be a topic Jason for a coochie but basic what are in short the colleges want is something that is not reflected currently in the application they want further insights into the studio and that can tell them more who they are so it is a very personal process and it's something that we tell the students is something that is very kind of close to your heart and you can share and that admissions person that is really many many essays would just get lost in your essay for whatever that 5 minutes is so just something powerful the topic itself is not a important as the way you write it and the way your present we tell students actually use first person when you're ready so those are just some tips there are many tips available on this topic so so we can schools will be offering the SAT for their students you heard any of this not heard this no I have not heard this I know out-of-state some students that happened to be out or are able you know some states are more open until no I have not heard that I think I see a question on this subject tests as well that again they had to because enough maybe you see question cuz they're really the once again it has been determined that they cannot use that in the admissions process to work against the student another question is for student-athletes interested in playing college sports how does that overlay with their academic application process any guidance on there they do have a separate additional process that they will need to do so it's through the NCAA Clearinghouse and they have to get what's called cleared innocence Oak is similar to a college application is on a separate website to NCAA will enter their classes things and Josh is sort of a checks and balances that is used in the ACT athletic world just to make sure that the academics are met cuz there are requirements oh yes and there is a transcript that will get sent MattyB great questions can you explain the difference between rolling and regular admissions admissions timeline on your list because rolling means that they although they have a deadline if you submitted early they'll also let you know so much of that early action early decision timeline with in like a month maybe six weeks or so so they review their applications on a rolling basis the question is is there an SAT scheduled for November 7th Ripta schedule from signed up I don't believe it's canceled yet but that will be determined by college board right now I have not heard of this canceled another question Loyola High School and Immaculate Heart are call Karina and Steven question about whether or not they're sorry yeah I'm not sure if they are private schools I don't know because this is all through college board so I'm not sure that they would be able. private schools have already offered the SATs for their students it's all available through college board there's a formal process we would need to go through which is correct then we can limit which cohorts are allowed to take the SAT in school and we haven't offered the CT for a little while I believe I'm not sure when the last time we did do that so that thank you for that information play questions before we let Miss Ives get back to her counseling meeting she graciously is missing for us well thank you so much for everyone and we will hopefully see you when we return by 5 thank you massage all right so that is the majority of what we were going to review today we can still answer any and you might have about anything that has to do with San Marino High School that's why I am here but don't intend to keep you online for any longer than we need to as we said in the beginning for all online for more than we should be but I'm here to answer any questions you might have perhaps the easiest ways to continue to type them into the chat because it allows us to read those clearly good question how are accounts getting to know kids these days really in much the same way they always have except for it's hard to do the pop in so kids it's difficult for kids to pop in but they are scheduling all their senior meetings was there just about Finn but then I'll move to Juniors Fall by sophomore and freshman any students who are struggling in anyway are obviously on a short list of students and parents if they want to reach out to but then their availability is consistent just taking a few more steps for them to connect primarily sending an email getting a meeting set up or a phone conversation being able to connect that way that's primarily the way that we're able to spend time with our kids at this point our parents giving login access to Naviance similar to PowerSchool know you can share course your student access we don't give parents access it's really not how much of a current tool for students it's a tool for them to input information into get out appropriate colleges and take them to places where there entry would be supported by the college and university also based on do you want to be on the East Coast West Coast Midwest International it takes all those interest into account important that the kids are 100 / involved in that process one of the things we found early on I think they did have access I don't know if they gave access or if they just encouraged access early on in the process when we had Naviance in the first couple of years near finding that students were unaware of many of the responses that they were giving because they weren't giving them so it's important that they walk through that process and that during the counseling meetings we're able to have conversations that link the information there with parents and counselors any thoughts about moving to a block schedule we have had some discussions about what a high model would look like if we were to come back in the hybrid and how we would be able to manage that one of the ideas was a block schedule there was some discussion about block scheduling when we were doing our now planning both in a hybrid model and and distance model for us to switch at this point would take not just our decision to want to switch but the support of the school board the superintendent and then we would have to negotiate. I with our bargaining units CSEA and smta survey results are we moving closer to hybrid I would say the survey results are separate from the idea of whether or not we're doing hybrid or not I'm assuming you're talking about the one that I sent out the very simplified one if it's a different survey I'm not aware of that the one I sent out ask parents if they were at all willing to return to school at this point and we had about 40% of parents say that they were not ready we had about 50% of parents say that they were and then we had a smattering of other saying maybe depending on the situation obviously some of the biggest concerns that I saw in that survey were the Fridays so we're trying to address that right now with our staff in terms of Friday's having tests on Fridays with such short periods having such short transition times on Fridays and then of course overall amount of screen time that our kids are having to manage because everything they do everything they turn in all the homework are very much driven so we're working on ways that we can help our staff members that better so that they can help our students pants that better I'm primarily is giving them the advice and the encouragement to find Opportunities to get kids offline whether that means reading offline I'm taking notes and then just taking a picture of those notes and sending them up or work that's written rather than on screen. We're trying to find new ways especially since we're aware that engagement is starting to wane because we've been doing this now for six weeks and we're as I'm sure there was a bit of I miss my friends and I miss my class when the school year started even though it was online that kept them very engage for a moment over kind of reaching that Tipping Point of the novelty of being back in school in this new way is wearing off and that's causing some concerns. We're always looking for new ways and we're really try to be flexible but still trying to get through the curriculum if students reach out to teachers for a letter of recommendation not hear back after waist what do you recommend they do from here email again rejection of the teacher I'd recommend both and I'd also ask the counselor to get involved to see if that can help the process all of our teachers on Naviance I've received a couple of requests to Naviance which is where I would encourage kids to be put in the request through because it does and it'll last teacher do a simple upload and they don't have to worry about going through the student to get that letter of recommendation to the college and university screen X an important issue very much longer passing periods yes there was some reference mostly to the passing. Time during the Friday schedule social time schedule the way to make new friends in party while we are right around the corner next Friday of having a drive-in movie at our softball field and I know that RSV is struggling with how they can connect with students remembering that every time we try to connect with students we are trying to do so online so we're pulling them back onto their screens to try to speak with them and to give them information so we're also trying to manage. Because one of the most challenging things I found even in my time is when I hit that certain moment in the afternoon I can be on Zoom I can be in a meeting but I am not at all effective and I think I'm pretty good at persevering through it but it's still a challenge so even when it's something that might be interesting to me and not quite as mentally taxing it just becomes very difficult to are all engaged so we're trying to manage that while still trying to figure out how to connect with kids here's one that Irvine allows parents to add the brag sheet because I can kids may be too high or shy me forget some important things Irvine send senior package for parents are actually I will definitely put that into the counselors meeting notes when we get out of here that might be something that we I'm not sure how the brag sheet works exactly on Naviance used to work much differently that used to be actually a physical sheet that you would just screenshot and upload but now I know that it is primarily digital so I'm not sure how that would work will we be adjusting the schedule to give longer passing periods that I haven't heard of that in discussion if we were to adjust the schedule that would be a negotiated item as well so it goes through a process of being negotiated being squirted by the superintendent being approved by the board so it's as simple as San Marino High School saying we need longer passing periods and changing it has to be pushed through that process when will the counselors reach out to the juniors are they focusing on seniors yes right now focusing on senior meetings I believe should be done in the next week then there will be a just a short deep breath while they reorganize themselves for juniors and then they will be reaching out to set up meeting which will take place roughly maybe mid October through November and then we'll be sophomores and freshmen freshmen will come more toward the end of February I will name will start meeting with them at Huntington middle school and then they'll have short individual meetings to get their course request for their freshman year any other questions very good okay is there any Preparatory packets for juniors regarding college apps sat etcetera yes I'll be providing those when they kick off are junior meetings MLB information coming out both to students and parents regarding that sure. Tesla not on Fridays yes we are definitely trying to be mean cognizant of that also with only 17 minutes for test upload is too short again yeah we're giving back to back to our staff and we're trying to stagger that throughout multiple weeks and encouraging people to have a assessment on other days as well tickets for the drive-in movie they're going to be promoting that I believe starting Monday it's limited to 65 vehicles and it will be something that comes through the Wilton and then they'll be posted online at the ASP web page dual enrollment in Fall 2021 probability I'm I'm hopeful I bet it appears as though every time we get pretty close we discover a new rule or a new barrier that we have to go over dual enrollment in a while it was written around it was definitely not made for schools like San Marino High School it's just find for schools where the majority of students are not going to college and it's an effort to get them connected so that they do continue on or that they have some sort of certification or partial. completed so that they will get a higher-paying and better job in the future so when we try to implement different programs that connect to PCC we often times run into problems certification for our teachers on giving that we want our staff to be teaching majority of our classes if not all of them as well as we were looking at certification issues say for example student who does some form of dual enrollment that allows them to earn a pharmacy tech license which means they can be a pharmacy tech none of the courses that are taken can be Cal State csuf group so that they cannot be used in in college they were they would be Scandal on while technically dual enrollment then cuz we could give credit to make it up credit of TCC internet earn a certificate when they do go to college they couldn't use those courses on their transcript in college so there's some nuances were working around so I wouldn't put any percentage right now on probably how do you because every time we seem to meet we find on a new nuances that we're going to try to work around although I am confident that with our new executive director myself and Mister tesinc why we're going to be a to get something on by 2021 that's our goal latest thoughts about when fields and basketball courts will be open for social system Play Time When I Wake County says it's okay remember none of these decisions are made by us none of them we we have to follow the rules of LA County reptile the state rules and while some counties are able to do some things we are in LA County and as unfortunate as that might be for us that's what we have to do it so when they say you cannot encourage or have people at all on any of your Fields interacting then we have to follow that rule so when what we're doing right now is trying to look at when we can bring her athletes back for some sort of physically distance training and conditioning drills they still aren't able to interact even if they do come back they have to be in cohorts of 10 with one coach and that coach cannot intermingle with any other athletes so if you have more than 10 kids on your team you now have to find either second coach or tell portion of its and if they're not able to practice with the rest of the team so I am not confident that we're going to be able to do it because they're that's just one of many other issues that go along with us trying to bring even our athletes back we're looking at bringing our most impacted students back and with special needs it's the same Rule and most of the students come with either an aide or sometimes even a nurse and we can only bring a certain amount back because there can only be a certain amount of people in a room and it's very much one that's what we're able to do so until the restrictions in LA County we have to follow all of those guidelines and most of them seem to be prohibitive at this point not to say we're not still working on it and trying to find Avenue homes for some if not all that but we are as I'm learning more and more and that's were planning more and more or I'm less optimistic and more cautious and guess I'm will seniors have priority to the drive-in no. seems to be a priority other than first come first serve as the Titans in background that shared with student no I just made this up on my own I told the staff that I would give it to them if they wanted it. I'll definitely I suppose I can put that in that blanket email to everyone if you'd like there are issues with testing difficult to read online put on teachers board is there another way for test be issued to ensure Clarity for reading oh yeah a lot of teachers are using connected some teachers are using Google Docs it really depends on the teacher I'd have to know exactly who that is to be able to reach out to them and offer support has Administration Lacy Park is a method of having socially distant class know the last time that we considered Lacy park for anything was for the 2020 graduation and because the city found it too difficult to shut down the park that option was not viable and by that means if we were to do a socially just in class we would have to shut the park down to everybody else and we would have to then monitor that in the city doesn't I don't think that would be a good use for them at that point but we could discuss that we do have plenty of open space at San Marino High School to have outside right now issues I'm having outside class tissue is we're not allowed to bring students back unless they are playing a sport outside with one coach and they never intermingle or they are a special needs highly impacted by social are by distance learning and also cannot intermingled I'll be with their one teacher and they're one set of staff and they can never interact with anyone else after just keep coming in and out of that. Is it possible to reduce class timer 40 minutes to help students stay focused and engaged less stress for 15 minutes with five minute breaks yeah you know it's it's definitely I mean we could we could do literally any schedule as long as we have the requisite minutes for the State of California which is 240 minutes understand with every minute we take away that reduces the amount of curriculum and many what happens is when that curriculum time that you're used to in the classroom gets taken away where does that work go well tends to go home it tends to go toward the student doing the work on their own at the house in order to get through the curriculum and I know that that might be interpreted as quite harsh for a kid but if we're thinking about ap's please have a specific set of curriculum that you are supposed to get through any are then we looked at students who are in non honors courses were looking to try to get into honors courses would be teaching them last to be prepared to do the higher-level course puts them at a disadvantage so we've already kind of reduced the curriculum I think by about 15 to 20% and I'd be hesitant to do any more than that I'd rather do does have staff work on building and breaks building in less screen time to their instruction enabling students to do some of the things that they need to do away from the screen even while keeping screen on there is definitely people who are managing this better and then we try to engage our our teams in collaboration so that they can share these skills but it is still learning process for all of us if School reopens how Pirate schedule work have classes School half-days home teachers teaching both in person and lives at home at the same time essentially that's the idea that we've been working with now that doesn't mean half and half exactly it means half of the students whose parents say that they can attend will attend so on average we had between 26 and 30 students in a classroom what's safe dirty a nice round number 30% as I said earlier said they're actually 40 would not be going to school so let's just say that 10 so 10 kids are going to stay home all the time no matter what and they're going to be learning at a distance very similar to the way they're learning now and the other 20 will be split into two groups of 10 now how often they go and which days or with weeks ago that would be an issue we would have to work through another issue would be the teacher then having to learn how to cage both online and in-person and monitor and manage both of them groups of people at the same time with the 10 students in person being kids that they can interact with in real-time but not not physically close B20 kids at home kids that are interacting with very similar to the way they are now but they cannot monitor them the way they do now and they are preparing materials both online and in-person and then managing the going back and forth of materials with students who are classroom versus those who are staying home the whole time so where is it seems on its face it's just a hey we bring some kids back they keep teaching we move forward right now a lot of teachers are teaching and in the way that I'm talking to you're not getting up or sitting right here at the screen they're working with their screen they're putting things on the screen and doing that with kids who are in front of you isn't going to work as well so how would they make that adjustment that's something have to consider every time we look at making a hybrid schedule decision discussion around Equity with PUSD in providing Zoom background came up I thought it was great idea but that is I have a lot of them most of minor Star Wars what was the outcome of the return to school survey really my my return to school my my little survey the outcome for me was a lot of feedback on how we could improve our instruction for distance learning and I've been sharing that slowly with my staff I'm going through highlights right now I'm high fighting Fridays and trying to get a little bit more of a calm Friday leading into the weekend and I'm requesting a reduction of weekend work I know for me if I have to get online any day of the weekend it makes the week worse so Burl I need the break I've never thought I'd needed it before because I've had so many times where drought week I'm interacting with kids and really not on the computer on my way from my desk I'm walking around campus I'm talking to teachers but now that I am constantly in front of the computer when Friday it's in my last meeting is over I close it and I walk away and I will not even put it away I just leave it out I don't even want to touch it so we need to get some space for kids for that as well I'm in this will be our last question because I do have another meeting in just 3 minutes has ministration thought about adding a home run to the schedule for the teachers can check in on students yes we have again that would be negotiated because that would be a change in the schedule change the working conditions to change the minutes available but it is something that I think both message to Pauline at the middle school and I would definitely like to implement it and I do believe that our teachers could find some value in it as well but again it's all about managing expectations and how much time we're going to take away the first one I think it's important though that we do find that time to check in with students and I think a home limit the start of the day could help us do that
