NAVIANCE: Family Connection

SMHS students have a new tool to help them plan for thier life after high school. Naviance is a college and career planning resource that students can use from home. To log onto the site click on the link above. Students will be able to complete interest and personality assessments in order to get a better understanding of who they are and use the results to look at potential careers. They can explore careers by industry sectors and find out what college path they need to follow. Students have individual student portfolio's where they can save all their research, input test scores, research colleges and lots more. All students will participate in a Naviance activity at each grade level to help them with the college and career planning process.

Freshmen are led by Mrs. Singh, ROP Counselor through a Career Center, Naviance & ROP orientation in the Fall Semester. Student learn about the resources available to them through the career center. Topics covered include meeting the staff, work permit requirements, attendance to college presentations, and college resource materials. During this meeting student will also learn about the ROP program, create individual ROP accounts, participate in a career survey, and learn about the benefits of enrolling in an ROP course. This is also a great opportunity for students to be introduced to Naviance, the schools college and career exploration program. Students participate in an interest inventory that matches potential careers based on the students interest. Freshmen meetings will take place November 28, 29, 30 and December 5, 2012

Sophomores meet with Mrs. Singh in the Spring semester through their English classes to revisit the Naviance program. As sophomores, students complete the Personality Inventory, based on Myers Briggs personality type. Results are delivered to students instantly after completing the inventory. Students are provided with a detailed description of their personality type, strengths and weaknesses. Along with their description, students receive a list of potential careers along with what students need to major in college. Sophomore meetings will take in January through their English classes. Parents encourage your sophomore to share with you about their personality type and matching careers! Sophomore meetings will be held January 16th, 17th and 25th.

Juniors meet with Mrs. Singh in the beginning of the school year and learn how to use the SuperMatch feature of Naviance. Students can create a list of potential colleges based on their individual preferences. Through the collaboration with the Junior English classes, students use the college resources to assist them with their English project. Students are to research and compare two colleges and create a create a PowerPoint that is presented in their English classes.

Seniors use Naviance to request transcripts, letters of recommendations and keep track of college applications. Most colleges are requesting that transcripts and letters be submitted electronically, and Naviance allows students to do so.  Students also have the opportunity to use the Resume feature that Naviance offers. They can create their resumes individually or through their ROP classes. All students enrolled in an ROP class will submit a resume in the spring semester.

All students can access scholarship information and summer enrichment programs using Naviance. Encourage your student to check out what opportunities are available to them TODAY!
