Beginning Drama

Course Description:
Beginning Drama is the first in a series of tree levels offered in the Drama/Theatre Program. The Beginning Drama Class is a one year introductory course open to all grades and is designed to involve the student in all aspects of the theatrical experience. Students learn the responsibilities of the performer, the backstage technicians and the audience. This class focuses on three components of the dramatic process; aesthetic perception, creative expression, and aesthetic valuing.

Course Content:
The student will develop aesthetic perception through the use of a variety of multi-sensory exercises including lessons in pantomime, rhythm and movement, oral communication and sensory awareness. The student will explore creative expression by learning fundamental acting techniques, improvisational techniques and the basics of play making and playwriting.

At the same time, the student will develop an awareness of the collaborative nature of playmaking through performance of group improvisations and scenes. The student is encouraged to participate in the five extracurricular productions produced yearly by the department. As an audience member, the student will develop a system of aesthetic valuing of drama/theatre by writing evaluations of classroom, school, and outside productions.
