Advanced Drama

Course Description:
Advanced Drama is the last in a series of three levels offered in the Drama/Theatre Program. Advanced Drama may be taken in the Junior and Senior years and is designed for the more mature drama student. The components of aesthetic perception, creative expression, theatre heritage, and aesthetic valuing are explored more fully in a collaborative classroom environment.

Course Content:
The student actor works with feelings and emotions, character types, voices and dialects. At this level, the student has the opportunity to produce and direct a one-act play for the public in a program of short plays. The student is introduced to acting techniques particular to radio, film, and television.

In the technical area, students gain practical experience in managing aspects of formal productions by assuming responsibility for student direction, stage management, house management and publicity work. They also run sound and lights and handle costume and make-up needs.

The students continue their study of the dramatic traditions of other cultures and learn to appreciate their differences. Students continue to take part in evaluations of more complexity and dept: character, theme and meaning in dramatic performance and literature are stressed.

1.1 The student uses vocabulary of the theatre to describe theatrical experiences.
1.3 The student identifies the use of metaphor, subtext, and symbolic elements in scripts and theatrical productions.

2.1 The student makes acting choices, using script analysis, character research, reflection and revision to create characters from classical, contemporary, realistic, and non-realistic dramatic texts.
2.2 The student improvises or writes dialogues and scenes, applying basic dramatic structure and including complex characters with unique dialogue that motivates action.
2.3 The student works collaboratively as designer, producer, director of actor to meet directional goals in scenes and plays from a variety of contemporary and classical playwrights.

Textbook:
None. All material for class study comes from existing film resources and literature.

Prerequisites:
Students must have completed Intermediate Drama with a B or better to continue to Advanced Drama.

Special Features:
All students are required to perform or direct a scene for public performance. Students are required to see and write evaluations of the five Department productions presented yearly.
